My wife and I are going to Frankfurt and to Rome this summer.
Any advice on what to see?

If these are the only two places you are going, spend as much time as possible in Rome and as little in Frankfurt.
The reason we found ourselves in Frankfurt was because our flights were to and from that airport.
There are things to see there, most of which are in the vicinity of Romerburg Square and the nearby riverfront.
The Square is a fun place to hang around. There are bars, restaurants and beer halls around there.
The cathedral a block away. We went to a beautiful Easter vigil mass there one year.
We saw everything we needed to see in Frankfurt in one day.
The list of things to do and see in Rome is endless.

I'm thinking of spending some time in the summer in FRA in 24 just because I've only flown through it, and haven't stopped there to do anything.
For Rome, I always throw out Nettuno American Cemetery (30m train ride away, and you can eat at a cafe on the beach). Rome is a 1-2 day adventure at most. There's a great hill to the west of the city (I think it's Monte Spaccto) where you get a great view of Rome.
Do. Not. Rent. A. Car. In. Rome.

Only if you do not enjoy looking at ancient architecture and history. There is so much to see, that you will probably not remember what you saw.

Frankfurt pretty much sucks, its not a great tourist city.
Can you immediately leave frankfurt upon landing and then go elsewhere? Most people just go there because of the airport and then take a flight elsewhere. There are many places in Germany that are MUCH nicer, like Munich if looking at big cities.
I also don't love Rome, there are much better places in Italy, but compared to Frankfurt its paradise

Just got back from Rome Monday night. Rent a car and drive 45 minutes to Lake Bracciano. Amazing place, I want to retire there. Gorgeous get away from all the tourists...

I think the Rhine river valley from Frankfurt would be a great river cruise to take. Never been but it looks like a nice area to explore.

Will spend a week in Frankfurt but at on a mission trip so I won’t have much time to see a lot. Flying out of FRA to Rome and spending a week there and have the whole week to do as I wish.
I can delay the trip to Rome a day or two if there is something spectacular in FRA.

There’s definitely nothing spectacular in Frankfurt
If you can get a couple of days in Florence, say 3-4 there and 3-4 in Rome I’d do that.
I MUCH prefer Florence to Rome. Much nicer, prettier, less crazy, more romantic city.

St. Peter’s was the most amazing building I’ve ever entered and one of the most awe inspiring things I’ve ever seen.

Don't delay your trip to Rome to spend more time in Frankfurt.
If you will be on a mission trip, have the Cathedral be part of that. You have to eat, so go around mealtime and eat at one of the restaurants on nearby Romerberg Square. Then you will have seen all you need to see in Frankfurt. It is not that bad but I would get to Rome asap.

Rome in the summer is very crowded and hot. Your enjoyment of your time there will be closely related to how well you can avoid standing in long lines and sweltering outside in the middle of the day. I will say that gelato helps.
I love Rome. It's my favorite big city in Europe, but you definitely have to manage things, or it can be very frustrating.
Obviously, you should see St. Peter's and the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel. But again, make sure that you don't end up standing in long lines. There are ways to avoid them.
Among the other spectacular churches are St. John Lateran, which was the big church in the city before St. Peters, and St. Mary Maggiore. You might also want to visit San Pietro in Vincoli to see Michaelangelo's famous Moses there.
For ancient Rome, the "must-see" sights are the Colosseum, the Forum, the Pantheon.
I think a visit to one of Rome's grand residences (or palaces) is also a must do. I went to the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj, but Borghese and Colonna are probably more famous.
If the crowds bother you, get out of the city to see Ostia Antica -- it's a 20-minute ride on a commuter train. Ostia Antica was a town in ancient times that functioned as Rome's port on the Tiber River, and so much of the town is preserved that you can walk around for hours.

I went to Germany and Italy in same trip in 2015. My advice is to see stuff south of Frankfurt while in Germany -- Heidelberg and Rothenburg.
In Rome, if it is your first time there, you should try to see: St. Peters/Vatican, Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel, Piazza Navona, Castel Sant'Angelo, Colosseum/Forum, Pantheon, Spanish Steps, and Trevi Fountain.
Advance tickets/reservations purchased directly from Vatican Museum and Colosseum are essential for a summer visit. For everywhere else, get there early in a.m. before crowds.

If FRA is your connection destination AND you want to or have to visit only one major city in Germany check out Dresden.

Never pass a church in Rome with out taking a peek inside.
The outside of some may not look impressive, but the inside may have some of the most amazing art and architecture you will ever see.
Seemed like most churches had green doors, not sure why.
