Not that I have the money for it, but has anyone been? How does it compare to the Destin, FL area?

If you don't have a boat, I'd stay in destin... Unless it was key west for like two days.

Destin and the Keys are very dissimilar. If you've got kids and are looking to just sit on a beach, it's really hard to beat the panhandle. If you're travelling without kids and want a variety of experiences, the keys certainly can accommodate you. Like NYCAuburn said, if you don't have a boat, it can get stale pretty quick. Key West is of course the biggest destination and you'll experience pretty much all it has to offer on land in 2-3 days. The best beach there is Fort Zach Taylor, all crushed coral and rough on your feet if you don't have water shoes. Bahia Honda State Park is one of the top beaches in the country, about a 45 min drive from KW. There are some great beaches in the backcountry, but all of those require a boat and local knowledge to reach.

It just depends on what your priorities are, if you're looking for the widest offering of food/culture/drinking/history/touristy shite, then KW is your spot. If you want to just lay back, chill, and maybe fish a little then Islamorada/Marathon are where you'd want to look at. I love the keys and would definitely recommend looking at taking a trip. fla-keys.com is a good resource as well.

Key West is more touristy and very little to no nice beaches. Downtown Key West is the French Quarter on the water.

Islamorada and Marathon were much nicer areas for water and beaches also smaller town vibe.
