I will be spending some time in the Belgium/Netherlands area for work in august and September. The wife (no pics) will be making a visit for 7 - 10 days. A few definite agenda items..

Must make it to Normandy
Must fly home from either Brussels or Amsterdam (AMS preferred).

What are some options here? I’m thinking fly to Paris. Get to Normandy. Make our way to Belgium (Ghent / Brugges). Then finish in Amsterdam.

Wife is a World War Buff so keep that in mind. I’ve been to Ghent quite a few times and ventured out a few miles all directions so I am somewhat familiar with that area

Thanks

Ghent used to be my favorite Belgian town but now I would say its Antwerp. Had a great time there this past summer.

World War Buff

Both wars or just WWII?

Few years back the wife and I spent a few weeks in France. Part of the trip was dedicated to WWI & WWII.

We rented a car in Paris and drove to the Somme Battlefield. Remembrance Trail I think it was called. Continued on to Bayeux for Normandy. Self driving tour for WWI and Overlord Tours for WWII.

Returned car back to Paris before other adventures. Driving in France is super easy. My wife is NOT a history buff and absolutely loved it. Bonus Battle of Hastings history in Bayeux and Joan of Arc burning site in Rouen.

3 days total I think. If yall decide to make that journey, I can recommend great podcasts to entertain on the flight. Amazing area, especially if interested in military history.

I highly recommend Normandy. We were there in April 2019, just weeks before the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

We drove to Normandy (Bayeux) in a rental car from Paris. The next day we took an all day tour of the D-Day beaches with Overlord tours which was fantastic.

. The day after that we drove to Mount St. Michel which is an easy day trip. The day after that was Easter Sunday and we just hung around Bayeux which is a pleasant little town to stay in. It is the only town around there that was spared the bombs of WW II, so the Cathedral and Old Town Center are still intact.

The following day we went back to Paris.

Great trip.

Both wars. Thanks for the suggestions. This is what I’m looking for. Anything war related is a plus.

At least on the War Museum/tours front, here are some suggestions.

For the Normandy Beaches, I would highly suggest Overlord Tours like many have said, they were absolutely wonderful, and if nothing else, take a look at where they take you if you want to do Normandy self directed.

Brussels has a terrific War Museum, with one of the more extensive WWI collections that I have seen.

LINK, it is right next to the Monument du Cinquantenaire.

If in Paris, check out Les Invalides, it houses Napoleon's tomb and is another awesome war museum.

I really enjoyed visiting the Somme (which is a weird thing to say, I know). Being able to walk through the trenches and see the craters had a big impact. The trenches are incredibly preserved there. Also visited two museums, several monuments and a graveyard during the self guided tour. Easily completed in one day driving from Paris and stayed in Amiens that night before heading to Bayeux.

For those who have heard Dan Carlin podcast, I found Charles May grave and reflected back on what those guys must have gone through.
