The ship leaves on Monday morning, we could leave Baton Rouge as early as Friday afternoon. I have made the drive plenty of times. My son is 11 my daughter is 5, we can drive straight through or make a stop for a night somewhere. I did a little searching last night and St Augustine caught my eye is this a good place to visit for a day or should I look elsewhere?

I would suggest staying in Orlando the night before the cruise. Don't plan on an extended drive the morning you depart. Too many things can happen and trust me, that boat won't wait for you.

I have no desire to stay in Orlando

It's not about desire, it's about what's smart. If you stay a couple hours away and something happens (car accident, medical issues, etc) you don't want to be too far away from the boat so you can still board. It's the same reason people font' fly into the debarkation city the day the ship sails, it just isn't a good idea.

Leave on Friday and do whatever you want but if you're sailing from Port Canaveral on Monday, the smart decision is to stay in Orlando or Port Canaveral on Sunday.

What you do on Friday and Saturday doesn't really make much of a difference.

I understand, but thats not what I was commenting on. I was simply suggesting that whatever you do it's smart to stay in Orlando or Port Canaveral on Sunday night. If you decide on St Augustine I wouldn't drive back to Orlando but I'd get at least to Daytona on Sunday. Lets say you decide on Tampa / St Pete rather that St Augustine then I think Orlando is a better bet than Port Canaveral.

St Augustine is great. Kids would like the lighthouse, and maybe the fort.
