Used to go every Christmas to visit friends. But that was almost 40 years ago.

Obviously, ski Purgatory.

Beyond that, you need more recent experience.

You can take the coal train from durango to silverton. It's gorgeous and I imagine it will be amazing in the winter.

Ska Brewery is just outside of town. High quality microbrew with a nice taproom and food. Just make sure to bring a designated driver.

Mesa Verde NP is less than an hour away and is worth the drive if you have never been.

Haven't been for Christmas but it's a cute little western town.

Just spent Wed. thru Mon. at Purgatory for a wedding, snowed Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Ride the train, drive Hwy 550 north thru Silverton into Ouray, unbelieveable drive. Go to Mesa Verde (cliff dwelling). There are micro-brewers all around the area. Box Canyon Falls in Ouray, brewer in Ouray also - Mr Grumpy Pants and eat next door at Maggie's.

We used to have a house in Durango off Lightner creek.. Where are you staying and what are you planning on doing?

CHS covers most of it.. Purgatory is awesome. Mesa Verde is cool but have only gone during summer, not sure how it looks covered in snow.

Not sure if Le Rendezvous is still there in downtown but they had a bomb breakfast. If it is still around I would suggest going there.

Not christmas, but I was there earlier this year and it is an incredible town. Probably my favorite town in Colorado.

We're staying in a small rustic cabin 1/2 mile south of Purgatory. We only have 3 full days including Christmas day.

If you are going to ride the train, you will do the "Polar Express", it is a shortened version they do during the winter, does not go all the way into Silverton. You can call and see if they use the Rockwood Depot when doing the Polar Express. The Rockwood Depot is only about 10 minutes south of Purgatory and will knock about a hour off each way off of the trip. Good thing is the first 30 minutes of train ride after leaving Rockwood is breathtaking, clinging to the cliff over the gorge.

Used to ski Purgatory/Durango every year. Growing up I remember eating at Friscos and all the parents getting bombed at Fahrquarts (SP?). Great place hope to get back sometime soon.

I was going to mention that you need to reserve in advance of trip, train gets full. Do not know if Polar Express brings the consession car but I would think so. It will have coffee, hot chocolate, breakfast items, snacks and locally brewed beers, wine and mixed drinks, can make for a fun time.
