I'd like to take my son hiking or do something outdoorsy with him and the wife. Obviously hiking Camelback ain't going to happen.

I know Phoenix has a good children's museum and science center. Plus a zoo. But we have those kind of things in Birmingham. Anything unique to Phoenix that a 3 year old could do or want to do?

Check around for some tubing trips in that area, Phoenix/Scottsdale.
It was relaxing and fun.
Not to strenuous for kids either.

Take him to Butcher Jones Beach area at Saguaro Lake. If you get there early in the am....you can usually see the Salt River wild horses roaming around. A whole family of them. Really cool to see them, especially if they are playing in the lake. Obviously don't try to pet them, but they usually will let you get fairly close enough to take pictures of them.

Saguaro Lake is about 30 minutes away from Scottsdale off highway 87. Google it for more directions (on my phone or I would post a link). There are hiking trails there that are not too strenuous that have awesome views of the lake. Saquaro Lake is my go to spot to go kayaking.

Also....the desert botanical gardens in PHX is cool to check out. Just walk around and see all the different desert plants.

They just opened a massive aquarium in Scottsdale as well. Never been....but supposed to be nice.

McCormick Stillman Railroad park he will also love if he likes trains. It is in Scottsdale and has a mini train that you can go on rides daily, as well as a carousel. There are other older trains you can tour the inside of. A bunch of model train clubs meet as well there and you can tour this building where they build all their model train sets. Pretty impressive. Place gets all done up big for Christmas every year as well. Train rides go through this Christmas wonderland they set up in the park.

This This This This This.

My 2.5 year old asks me to go daily. We live 1500 miles away. They also have a full play area with slides/swings/etc. That is shaded. It's pretty much the perfect park. And you're right by any kind of food you could imagine. The tickets for the train are 6 for $10 and 3 and under don't need them. They have a carousel too if thats of interest.

This play area is adorable as well.
