Going to Big Bend National Park for a couple days during Thanksgiving holiday. 10 and 5 year old boys who like to hike. What should we make sure to see. McDonald Observatory worth a visit? Thanks.

the hikes in chisos mountains are incredible. unfortunately they had a big fire there this year so some trails may be closed, and obviously a lot of area got burnt.

definitely do some research on conditions there. big bend in magnificent.

where are you staying, i was out there for a week this past october and can give you some ideas on other stuff around the area

check on the observatory - last year thanksgiving they were doing some sort of reservation system. Not sure what they are doing currently.

in addition to the basin hikes already mentioned, we like the canyons, Boquillas and Santa Elena. Closed Canyon in BBRSP is very cool but a bit of a (very beautiful) drive for a short hike.

Get passports if you don't have them and go to Boquillas if the crossing is open.

FYI - McDonald is a 3 hr drive from Big Bend and you'll need a reservation.

As far as hiking, Emory Peak via Pinnacles is hard to beat. If your kids don't something quite that strenous, Laguna Meadows is not bad. The Emory-related trails are open after a fire closed them in late spring.

Hopefully you have booked a place to stay. Thanksgiving is high season in Big Bend and tough to find a place to stay this late. If you only have a couple of days then you'll probably want to stay in the park but the drive down River Road along the Rio Grande to Presidio is really nice and you can stop for a short hike into Closed Canyon. In Presidio you can eat at Oasis cafe which is the best enchiladas Ive ever had....and I went back a second time last year to confirm the greatness of them. Like others have said, the Observatory is a long drive from the park and it would be better to spend a night in Ft Davis if you are going to the observatory.

A couple nights at Ten Bits Ranch in Terlingua. 1 night in Alpine. Have a hunting camp in Sanderson so taking boys and wife to go kill deer and exotics. Then spend time at Big Bend. I read the trip to Mexico is closed right now due to Covid. Also I can get reservations for observatory was wondering if worth the detour? Marfa? Hot Springs?

Looks like Ole gets good reviews. Next time I'm over there and hungry I will try it.

Marfa is not for baws, its artsy and progressive. But I think most places there are still shut due to covid. There are places in Alpine I like, such as Harry's Tinija, but overall its meh.

You didn’t hurt my feelings. Just pointing out the glaring dismissive comment that you made.

I did the McDonald observatory on the way back to Midland after our Big Bend visit. It was February and very, very cold. Otherwise yes it is worth it. Nov should be great
