Any recommendations for vacation to Belize? Places to stay, and things to do?

Ambergris Caye. The mainland is a shithole.
However, you can day trip from Ambergris to the mainland to see the Mayan ruins, do cave tubing and visit a zoo that is surprisingly nice for such a poor country.

VA,
Thanks for the info. How about the beaches? This would be for a family vacation, with older teenage kids. Would this be a bad choice.

Went with some buddies last January. We were in San Pedro.
Overall, I thought Belize was a shithole as well. If you are going strictly for fishing and diving it's fine, but I wouldn't go for the beaches.

The beaches aren't what you'd expect. There's some sand but seaweed comes all the way up on most beaches and it tends to be a little rocky.
Personally, I'd look at Roatan. The diving and snorkeling is still fantastic and the price is right. If you choose Roatan I have a guy there that drives us around and his pricing is great. He also has a boat and can take you and the family out to Sandy Caye for a day trip.

Ambergris Caye is nice but not too much to do other than diving and hang out on the beach. The beaches aren't pristine but I loved it.

I'd suggest this as well.

VA,
Roatan looks pretty awesome. That might be what I am looking for.

Stay on West Bay Beach. In addition to what I mentioned earlier you can zip line and go to Little French Cay.
There are other things to do on the island but those would be a hit with kids.
ETA: Not sure how much older kids would like Little French Cay but there are plenty of activities and things to do. I first took my kids when they were 21 and 17.

For family Roatan is awesome. If you are into swimming with dolphins, it is consistently rated as one of the best places on the planet to do this.

Great info guys, I really appreciate it. Kids are 18-16 so that looks like a great spot. Prices look very good as well. What about flights?

The 18 year old is old enough to drink there.
We flew to San Salvador last year and stayed there overnight and caught an early flight to Roatan. The route used to get us there same day. Depending on where you leave from you may be able to get there same day. We just got in too late.
Our route is from Washington Dulles.

What time of year are you looking at? You'll want to check to see when the rainy season is and avoid that. I can tell you that the rainy season in Belize is June which we unfortunately found out the hard way.
ETA: June and July is also the first rainy season on Roatan but we've been there both months and had little to no rain both times. You definitely don't want to be there the second rainy season which is later in the year.

Wiki is taboo in TD but this one's pretty good "Roatan 101" and is worth a skimover, if nothing else.
