Anyone ever booked a trip via groupon (looking at Europe)?

Wife wants to go to Europe. I thought it would be very expensive but she showed me some options from groupon. One was 10 days/8 nights in Italy for $1099/person. This includes flights from jfk and 8 nights in hotels that from what I gather all get 4-5 rating stars on Expedia/Travelocity/booking.

I'm sure the flight times and days will be super-inconvenient and we'll have to budged $1000 to get to jfk, but I'm pretty shocked at how cheap this is. I'm trying to figure out the catch.

Anyone ever done this before?

Good question. I see these awesome deals pop up quite often and always wonder if they're legit.

I've never done groupon, but you can get similar prices doing a package through Expedia if you stay at small, boutique hotels.

I know people that have booked for South America through groupon, never Europe though.

So basically it would cost 1500-1600 a person, but includes hotel. If you caught a deal (when under 700) you could actually do this cheaper by booking flight/hotel separate I would think.

New Orleans to Venice, Italy for 1600 a person

New Orleans to London for 1545 including Hotel

New Orleans to Paris for 1450 a person

Thanks guys, I will look at those two places.

We want to go for 7'ish days. She wants Italy which is fine with mine. I told her she needs to figure out what she wants to see, not just show up and BOOM, Italy...

Budget wise, what are we looking at on top of flights and hotels? If we say $3000-$3500 for that, now much are we looking on top of that? Could we do the trip for $5k with no ragrets? $6k? I want to save money but I don't think we'll be frequenting Italy in the future so might as knock as much out as possible.

I will say I booked through priceline my trip, was 1400 a person counting airfare/hotel and stayed in Belgium. We rented a car and drove, say Holland, Belgium, part of Germany, and we wanted to see Italy so booked a flight and went for 2 days. Cost us 800 to do Italy for flight/hotel.
Since we had a car we were able to see a lot and come and go as we please, driving was not bad overseas at all. I found it easier than some larger cities in the US.

Depends on what you want to do, I will say use tripadvisor and book your museum/sight-seeing stuff with them ahead of time to save money. It is easy to plan out as many places to eat are cheaper than here unless you want a fine dining meal. We stuck to casual everywhere but Italy and even that wasn't bad. I want to say we spent 100-150 Euros on the meal.

With Italy, you can take the boat to see nearby islands and in Venice that runs you 80 Euro for a round-trip. Gondola ride at night will run you more, just don't get a guy who answers his phone half-way through and talks the rest of the trip.

booked a 10 day escorted Italy trip through groupon. The key is to check out the travel agent offering, gate1 was solid. Go to gate 1 site directly to check out their itinerary and compare their prices to the groupon

Do they pick your hotel or do you have options? When I went to Oktoberfest 2 years ago for my second time we got hotel for 4 nights and flight for like $1100 each on Expedia and flights were going for exactly the same. So basically we got 4 $240ish hotel nights for free, it didn't make sense at all but it was great.

Italy is really pretty cheap outside of hotel and air fare. I wouldn't buy the groupon without comparing your flights and hotel options first. I use Booking.com for europe hotels they have solid reviews you can view and easy to compare prices.
