If so, what was your experience like?
One month from now my wife and I will be there for 4 days. Did you ever feel unsafe?

Haven't been to Guatemala but I've traveled in quite a bit of Costa Rica and Panama on my own and never felt unsafe.
This is the rainy season in Central America so have some rain gear. It doesn't make things hopeless but most days it will rain for at least an hour or two. Don't expect the sunny views of the pictures you posted, that will be rare.
You should still have a good time, though. The people there are usually very friendly.

I went to Lake Atitlan, Antigua, and Tical. It was beautiful.
I never felt unsafe, but we were with a friend of the family who was an adviser to the president of Guatemala. The guy owned 11 houses in Guatemala and we got to stay in a few of them.
We were there during Easter and the parades and sand art in Antigua is amazing.
We also stayed a night in a small village named Solola. The whole village is on the the side of a hill and is pretty poor. The guy owned a big house at the top of the hill. It was awesome. A couple years later there was a mud slide in Solola and 700 people were killed.
Lake Atitlan is beautiful and it is worth it to take a boat tour to some of the different markets on the edge of the lake. There are some unbelievable houses built into the cliffs around the lake.
If you can make it to the Mayan ruins in Tical i would go. We stayed in a hotel in the rain forest. They have guided tours, but you can also just wonder around the ruins by yourself. We saw tons of cool wildlife including monkeys, which were a plenty.
ETA: If you take a boat tour on Lake Atitlan you will probably see some trash near the shore in front of the markets, but the rest of the lake is crystal clear.

You ask the dumbest questions. Why on earth would you go somewhere if a concern is feeling "unsafe"?
And 4 days? Really?

Thanks, man! I appreciate the info.
My wife and I are very excited but we like to research safety before we travel to any foreign country.
We'll be in Antigua for 3 days and Lake Atitlan area for 4 days.

The point is that if you have safety concerns you should do that research prior to booking the trip.
Enjoy the trip. It looks like a beautiful place. As for being an arse, your post history speaks for itself.

Buddy of mine is well traveled globally and my go to for travel Intel. He went to Atitlan, if I recall, around New Years a few years ago. He loved it, had a blast. I'll see if I can dig up his email reviews.

Been to Atitlan and Panajachel, really enjoyed seeing the lake. It's massive with pretty overlooking mountains. Would definitely recommend a boat tour...
I felt safe the entire time. Antigua was a cool city. Slightly touristy, but worth a visit. Had an amazing meal that a small resturant, really wish I could remember the name. Best steak I ever had

This is late as shite, but I went to Guatemala over the summer and absolutely loved it. I'd go back in a heartbeat if I could, easily the best trip I've ever taken in my short life. We stayed at Lake Atitlan for 2 days as part of a tour around the country.
