With the Russian visa gauntlet I am considering delaying that trip until next year. Egypt is the one place I have REALLY wanted to visit for a long time but the political climate has put me off but I decided if they get me, they get me and will go either this year or next. I talked with a chick from Norway while in Turks and she said after the Arab Spring that trash was piled high and things were dirty, but IDGAF as long as the tourist traps are ok.
Egypt is dirt cheap right now, 2K for hotel and round trip.

Did Egypt but not in the last two years. We went in 2008 before the problems began. Spent couple of days in Alexandria and then three days in Cairo. Happy that we had the opportunity to visit the area. It appears dirty, but think it is because of the crowding and dust.

Went at the end of 2015/beginning of 2016. Didn't stay too long. Just did the pyramids and other touristy things for a day or so before we headed out for a safari. I Really enjoyed it. We stayed at the Le Méridien Cairo Airport because it is connected to the terminal. Also, we went not long after that plane crash due to the bomb at the end of 2015, so figured things were safer near the airport because of the extra security. When we went, they were hurting badly for tourism because of everything that had been happening. I scheduled a tour of all the areas which was great. Picked us up from the hotel and really helped us understand everything. Also, she helped us deal with all the people who try to sell you stuff. Everyone we met, though, was super nice and happy to have us there. There was certainly trash and dirty parts, but I didn't think it was a ton more than other areas I have been. It isn't great, but not that big of a deal. According to our guide, we went during what was usually a high time for them and there was basically no one at the pyramids and sphinx. Made for great pictures and experience. I wouldn't be worried about safety as long as you are smart about everything. I also recommended spending the extra and having a guide for what you do. They obviously know everything well and can help you out besides actually telling you about what you're doing/looking at. We stayed in Cairo area because the US embassy recommended it. Idk if that recommendation has changed, but obviously pay attention to that.
