Will be there next Friday for 4 days before a Viking River Cruise on the Rhine.
Amazing city I know and more to do than time available!
But...
Any "pro tips" on must see locations, restaurants, etc.?
We'll be staying near the Central Station area.

Definitely get a rijstaffel.
Theres a restaurant in the Rembrantplein that nails it.
Rent bicycles and explore Vondelpark.
Do a daytrip to IJmulden and watch how they raise and lower ships.
Eat as much Indonesian and Surinaamese food as possible.

Weather will be miserable (high in low 50s, rain and windy) so that will limit what you want to do. Museums and Anne Frank House will be good. Take the free ferry (F4 or F4) behind Centraal Station to NDSM. This is the former shipyard that is now a hip area full of bars and restaurants. The actual cavernous building/hangra they used to build ships in is now full of artists workshops where you can walk around and check out all sorts of funky stuff.

Van Gogh museum is incredible. Need reservations for all the big museums so make those now.

Is it always like this during this time of year? I am going next year the week of thanksgiving and wanted to know how weather was like.

Pretty much from September til June. And then there are the short days this time of year when the sun rises about 8am and sets at 5pm. But with the clouds and rain it seems like even less daylight.

We went to the Rijksmuseum during our stay and really enjoyed that. Also second getting some bikes and riding around. We stayed at the Kimpton near Central Station and they had free ones to use.
Find a cafe and sit and watch people/bikes/boats go by. I love Amsterdam and don't have any real agenda when I go there other than hanging around and exploring.

Maybe I'm weird but like 90% of my most memorable travel days are weather like this, especially city exploration. I love it. Fewer fellow tourists, more reason to drop into random bars/pubs/restaurants to get out of the elements, etc.

Been living here nearly a decade November is possibly the shittiest month of the year in terms of weather, so far this year it’s been perhaps even above average rainy.

Resident Amsterdammer here.
What in particular are you looking for in terms of food?
Can recommend a few places:
Splurge:
- The Dutchess: an elegant if a bit gaudy Michelin-starred restaurant, reasonably priced for what it is.
- Gowrie 101: fine experimental dining with a Japanese twist.
- Yamazato: Michelin-starred Japanese cuisine.
- Ron’s Gastrobar: owned by a famous name in the Dutch dining scene, fun experimental fine-dining, pricey.
Asian:
- Blauw: a well-regarded Indonesian restaurant from the same guy behind Ron’s Gastro.
- Ron’s Gastro Oriental: also from the Ron’s family. High-end Asian fusion.
- A-Fusion: similar to Ron’s oriental but a little bit less pricey.
- Sea Palace: excellent Dim Sum in a floating pagoda with great views, next to Centraal Station.
- Oriental City: also excellent Dim Sum located on Dam Straat cutting through the heart of the Old town (RLD)
- China Sichuan: several locations, mostly around the RLD, excellent Szechuan cuisine, they used to have a Michelin star back in the day.
- FULU: another great restaurant specializing in Szechuan style cuisine.
- Ramen Kingdom: amazing ramen, but TikTok and IG influencers have blown it up and there’s always an absurdly long line.
Italian-style Pizza:
- Pazzi
- Mozzico
Surinamese:
- Tjin’s Toko
- Roopram Roti
Mexican & LatAm:
- Bacalar: generally decent and friendly priced Mexican is more readily available in the US, but this place does some great “high-level” tacos also nice cocktails and Mezcal selection.
- Coba: similar to Bacalar
- Salmuera: Argentinian/Latin American fusion, main emphasis Argentina empanadas and meats + Peruvian style ceviche, good cocktails.
Drinks:
- Sins of Sal: owned by Salmuera crew, a Latin inspired cocktail bar that serves some very delicious Mexican inspired fare - mainly tacos and tostadas.
- Tales & Spirits: probably my favorite cocktail bar in town.
- Luminair: a rooftop cocktail bar on the top of the Double Tree Hilton - next to Centraal. Cool concept, amazing views of the city, cocktails aren’t cheap though.
- Brouwerij ‘t IJ: the so-called “windmill brewery” established local craft brewer with a brewpub right next to a historic windmill.

The weather lately has been wet, windy and grey.
The wind and cool moisture amplify the bite of the cold, so while temperatures have been somewhat mild 40s-50s the real feel temp is a bit colder. And forecast shows this continuing for the next week more or less.
Definitely pack good water-resistant outerwear, bring or plan to buy an umbrella, dress in layers.
If you have contactless/tap-n-go or Apple Pay cards you can use them to check in and out of public transport (always remember to check out or you’ll be charged the full route fare).
The app BuienAlarm, think it’s called “Drops - Rain App” for English speaking markets, is handy for checking the anticipated rain with a two hour outlook.

get some bitterballen somehwere. it's the best thing in dutch cuisine. de ballen bar in oud west looks good.

Went to DC over Mardi Gras - it was cold and snowy. Took the train to NYC one day, it was a "wind advisory" day. Highs in the 20s, with 30-40 mph winds.
We damn near froze to death, but had an absolute blast.
