Seward is a cool little town. Resurrection Bay is beautiful

I have been on two Alaskan cruises, both times on Holland America. We sailed from Vancouver northward to Seward both times. One time we took an additional land tour to the Denali Park. The other time we went a week early and divided our time between Victoria and Vancouver which are two fantastic cities to visit.

Go a few days early and spend some time around in Southcentral if you can. What's your itinerary for the cruise?

You will love it. We went last summer out of Seattle and this summer we are doing one again out of Vancouver. Best vacation of my life. It is absolutely gorgeous.

Go through Hatcher's Pass if you can rent a vehicle and get there early.

Hatchers Pass is an amazing place. I used to live on the Fishook road, in the fall there really isn't a more awesome place. I stayed in those cabins at the corner of Palmer and Wasilla Fishook road once, really enjoyed it (before I moved there)

Would you recommend Holland with a 15 and 11 year old? Dont want it to be an "older" person cruise. LOL

Icy Strait- Do the zipline. It's awesome, one of the highest and longest in the world.
Skagway- Take the WP&YR excursion if it's a sunny day. If it's cloudy, the excursion will go above the cloudline and you'll miss out on the incredible views. If not, there's a lot of local history you can check out around town. Whole town is walkable and it's a very cool place. Go to Dyea, you'll need a ride via a tour service or rent a car. It's a ghost town now, but lots of brown bears in the flats. Be careful though.
Juneau- Too many things to mention. I'll say if you can hike fairly well and don't mind rough terrain and are a bit adventurous, take a guided hike to the ice caves under the Mendenhall Glacier. Few places in the world that will match that experience.

quote:I have been on about a dozen cruises, three of them on HAL, two to Alaska and one in the Mediterranean. As far as being an old folks cruise, I didn't think it was that bad. There is plenty for the kids to enjoy such as whale watching excursions, white water rafting and the White Pass train ride through the Yukon Territory. As far as being an old folks cruise, I believe that has more to do with the ittenary than with the cruise line. The only obviously old folks cruise I have been on was a Princess cruise to New England and Eastern Canada. If you go to Caribbean beaches you will have a younger crowd. Alaska is all about the scenery which is gorgeous. I am 58 years old so take that for what it is worth.
older person cruise

I also want to take an AK cruise.
Would appreciate any specific recommendations (or dislikes) of cruise lines, routes, best time to go, excursions, etc.
Will be two adults with no kids.

Thanks for the response.
I'm guessing you would rank HAL quite a bit higher than Carnival and RC?
I don't consider 58 old.

What are you wanting to see? Lots of options, including cruise/tours. For wildlife, July/August is your best bet, though you can see abundant wildlife anytime if you know where to go.
Most cruises will either go to Glacier Bay, Tracy Arm or Hubbard Glacier (cross gulf only) for tidewater glaciers. All are spectacular but much different experiences. As far as excursions, there are hundreds in the various port towns so you'll have to decide what kind of stuff you want to do. If you're into whales, take a whale watching excursion out of Juneau.

No question it is better than Carnival. I have never been on Royal Caribbean.

Definitely go whale watching. Orcas and Humpbacks. Amazing stuff.

We took HAL's whale watching excursion in Juneau. It was a 3 1/2 hour ride around Shelter Island. Whales were popping up constantly. It was a lot of fun especially since the weather was beautiful that day. On the way we stopped to see Mendenhall Glacier. That is a must see in Juneau. If this is not the most impressive glacier in the world it has to be the most impressive one you can drive to.

We went on Celebrity and I can't recommend it enough.

Hiking under it through the ice caves is incredible.

Harding icefield trail in Seward
Breakfast at nellies (gold rush cafe), order the bacon and tomato eggs benidict or the bacon and egg sliders
