Wifi bandwidth question

I have a 5 or 6 year old belkin router nothing fancy. Hard wired my desktop gets 60mbps consistently which is what my provider is giving me.
On wifi most of my devices get 30mpbs. This includes my iPhone 6 Plus, wife's iPhone 6, my work laptop which is a 2 year old HP probook.
I've tried changing the channels etc. but that's the best speed I can get on wifi. I can be standing next to the router with nothing between us. So I'm thinking the router is old and cheap.
Yesterday I receive my wife's new laptop and get on wifi do a speed test and it gets 60mbps. How come this is the only device that can pull 60 on wifi?

Wifi is very finicky, you can never count on it being consistent. Interference, multiple devices connected, different speed standards (G, N, AC), obstructions, etc... it's a miracle it works at all. And close proximity isn't always the best.
But if you are getting consistent speeds and they are just slower than expected, I would guess your router is in mixed mode (this is typical), and for whatever reason most of your devices are falling back to wireless G rather than N or whatever. Maybe see if there is a firmware update for your router.

I had this same issue.
When you go into control panel - networking and right click on your wireless adapter, what speed does it show? I'm not on my laptop right now so I'm just going off of memory on how to get there, but my issue is that my laptop wifi card only supported up to 54mb/s when I right clicked on it's properties..which means you'll only be able to get half, maybe a little more than that in actual speeds.
It's probable that your old laptop has a shittier network card that doesn't support higher wireless speeds.

5 or 6 year old router is slower than the year old phone. That's the answer.

I think it's just the router being older and cheap, the new laptop is not getting consistent 60mbps on wifi anymore. It's varying between 40-60 now.

You can either do a LAN speed test to take your ISP out of the equation just to be sure, or you can just go ahead and upgrade your router (probably due for an upgrade anyway).
edit: nevermind on the LAN speed test if your hardwired desktop gets 60mbps consistently, just get a new router
