I'm considering hiring someone part time (probably a student) to help with desktop support during the week. I have no idea what the going rate would be. Any ideas?

$13/hour is what our interns make. Can't say if that is good or bad

Seems pretty reasonable for an intern.

As for OP - I wouldn't bother with hiring an employee unless its a full time position. Part time = temp. Temp IT work sucks for the employer, especially if this position is basically your entire IT dept. Look into a managed service provider that will charge you monthly, either per endpoint or per user. They will either offer a full AYCE (all you can eat) package or a base price with unlimited remote support + billable rate for on site support.

It's really just a position to be a helper in the IT dept. The person could do anything from updating the website to helping end users with small issues to disposing of old equipment (wiping drives, etc). Nothing high level and most of it wouldn't be time sensitive so ideal for a student's schedule.

We've done this in the past and had good results from the hires. We just haven't done it in several years and I don't know what a student worker is typically getting paid.

If you already have an IT dept and just looking for a part timer, then I agree with the above poster that suggested contacting the ISDS dept at LSU. I'm sure they have an internship program or at least a job board that you'll find useful.

Pay em $12-15 per hour. Anything under $12 would be a waste of time.
