I have a consulting business with a website that I think could benefit some out of this.

The main reason I started this thread is for a business I just started a couple of weeks ago. The website isn't even finished yet. Should be within the next week. The business model is heavily geared towards Internet traffic and customers purchasing our service from the interwebz.

For the start up I would just like to get it on the first page of Google in certain searches. We will be using Google ads though

My glass shop is first on Google and second on yahoo. My website is pretty damn simple and I posted my site address on every single free advertising site I could. Also, time website has been open I believe helps. Other thing that helps, at least me, is there is only 4-5 other glass shops where I live. Have a Google place and yahoo local listing.

Guy below you is attempting local search (which is good mind you).

What terms are you attempting to rank for?

Consulting business? Service? Product?

Listing your site on Google Plus with a physical address and phone number will help a lot. Even more if you're in a small town/area.

Use Google Webmasters/Analytics

List your business on sites that allow reviews like Yelp.. great for link backs.

Don't expect instant results.

I looked into the google ads today...to be in the top 15% I would need to spend about 500/month. To be the top website for those searches I would need to spend 1000/month. This rank and percentage is in terms of money spent. Is this more than normal?

It depends on how much competition there is for the search terms you want. You are essentially bidding for better placement.

Have you tried narrowing it down by location (if that matters), demographics, or more specific terms? Are you happy with the number of visitors it estimates you will get?

Yeah depends on what keywords you're using. Not sure where you got those numbers. Use Google's Keyword Planner Tool.

It's free (just sign up with an Adwords account) and you'll see real data.

Posting articles, announcements, etc.. regarding your business, cool industry news, trends, trade shows your company is in, new products from your suppliers, etc... in social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn can get your company lots of hits, particularly if you include links back to your company.

If you have willing suppliers, rep firms and employees, ask them to help you in your campaigns by reposting and commenting. Include hashtags for your business and products in Twitter. Repost theirs, too. Make it a two-way street.

One area overlooked by many people when using Google Ad Words is to use the names of your competitors and catch phrases of the product lines they carry. When people search for them, you want to come up, too, potentially creating more hits and showing up more in searches. I wouldn't 'Like' any of their posts, though.

Additionally, use LinkedIn. Actively build your network. Encourage others to contact you and link your contact info back to your website, creating more traffic. Join groups that touch on your trade. Join discussion threads. Start discussion threads. If you're an alum, join the local alumni group fo network.

Also, banner ads. Ever wonder about the ads you see here that sometimes are not local, but national? You see those because of your own search history, and in many cases, your 'recent' search history. You want your banner ads targeting people's recent searches, so be sure if you conduct a banner ad campaign that you have fully included as many ad words as you can. I've seen ads here on TD that probably very few other posters have seen because of my recent searches on particular technologies related to a particular use application.

Good luck. There are lots of ways to get to the top of the page or in the first page in search engines. It takes time, coordination of effort and organization. Dollars to throw at it can help.

Thanks for all of the help y'all have given in this thread. I have started and will continue to do the things mentioned in this thread.

I will give updates on how the process goes and probably come back to discuss more.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I assume you are running your own site? I can get to the front page of google searches in about a week.

You will need verify your site through Google Webmaster Tools. After you have done this make sure that you have a sitemap.xml setup. Also create a robot.txt file so when bots look at your site they know where not to look.

Constantly keeping new content on a site will cause Google's bots to crawl your site more often. If you post 1 new article a day. You can use article spinners that take that same article, but re-write it and repost automatically. So it generates more hits to your site from google's bots and continuing to move you up the search engine.

Also look at Google Adwords and see the most searched word or words for the content you are delivering from your site. Once you find some good keywords throw those in your meta tag.

If you want to have google crawl your site without having to wait for a bot to get tasked with it. Then in Google Webmaster Tools you can use Fetch as Google and it will instantly crawl any url for your site that you put into the input box.

I average about 20k views a day and with my site that has been around since February in sort of a niche market. Nonetheless I imagine my unique views will be doubled by this time next month.

I have tried the SEO programs people are charging for online and this way is just as effective without spending $$$.

Be careful on the article spinup.

You could get a penalty from
Google and never recover to rank again.

Duplicate content is not good content. Write better content than others in your market.
