I have a buddy whose Windows computer is infected. I know Malwarebytes used to be solid back in the day, but its been a while since I used it. I noticed that the free version of Malwarebytes is only good for two weeks. Then they want you to purchase the Premium edition.

Besides Malwarebytes, what are some good options for virus protection software?

You can still use malewarebytes after the trial period. You just don't get real time protection.

I use Kaspersky.

When someone is troubled by a virus.

Rkill
Malewarebytes
HitmanPro
Emissoft
RogueKiller
JRT

If they haven't moved to windows 10, they need to. Security Essentials & Security improvements to Windows 10 make it worth the move.

Consumer reports was recommending ESET last year. I have been very satisfied. It looks like now that they have a best buy recomendation of something called G Data internet security.

I find I trust CR on these things because they do not accept advertising so are not as skewed positively toward the big boys that purchase lots of advertising.

Top 5 in order for paid editions:

BullGuard Internet Security
G Data Internet Security
ZoneAlarm Pro Antivirus + Firewall 2016
ESET Smart Security
Kaspersky Internet Security

Here is a link, not sure if it will work

Think you meant to reply to Chicken. Word of advice, always wear a cyber condom on TD. Have you seen the cyber skanks on this site?

Panda is a really good software that has all essential features for free. You can pay some money and get some extra helpful bells and whistles, but it's not required. Being a poor grad student, I chose the former option.

I just use MSE and back up every day. If I ever do get infected, I can just restore from backup. It takes about an hour, most of which time I just spend doing something else.

The key is to do a few dry runs before you have to do it for real. Then you just have a simple routine to run through instead of a nerve-wracking emergency. Protects against hardware failures, theft, etc. too.
