I am in the planning phase of cutting the cord. Here is my plan.

Shop internet providers, but may go with a dedicated internet service like DSL extreme.

My AT&T 24mbps is solid..and they have a 1000gb data cap that I never come close to reaching.

quote:

Digital Antenna (Mohu or something similar).

That depends heavily on your location. Hope it works out for you..mine is solid.

quote:

Sling TV with ESPN add-on.

What are your interests in TV?
Are you single? Married? Kids?

I don't recommend Sling TV if you have a wife and kids

I am planning to also get Fire TV with Kodi installed. All in all, I should go from $196 to $88-95.

I guess my question about Kodi is, will that be my work around to needing Hulu, HBOGo, and Showtime? Shows usually populate on there the day after airing on TV, right?

Yes, for the most part. Part of the "you're not paying for it" draw is that you never really know. I do know that Game of Thrones was on a few hours after it aired. I'm sure all the other popular shows are too.

To be honest, Netflix is really dedicated and structured, but if you want to save some money, I think KODI will be a good replacement.

I guess it depends on what you're using it for.

I would try it out..buy some from best buy and if it doesn't work like you want..return it from a credit. Wouldn't buy the cheapest one, though.

Currently have this. Might just retain it and drop Cable.

I'm in Metairie. Should be good

Why? My original concern was limiting to one device, but I thought they had a beta version now that allowed multiple devices?

TV interests are pretty small besides sports. This whole thing prompted when we were talking the other day. We pay $196 for basically just watching HGTV, news, She watches E, and Lifetime. Otherwise, it is just movies, Netflix, or piggy backing our SIL's HBO which we trade her for our Showtime.

The major reason I considered Sling is to have a dedicated sports option.

We do already have Netflix. I don't really factor that into the cost of cable equation since it is currently lagniappe for us.
I figured FireTV w/ Kodi would eliminate us having to piggy back the HBO plus still giving us access to Homeland and a few other shows we like on Showitme.

Forgot to mention we also have Prime so we technically have Amazon Video as well. We never use it because we just use our Apple TV. I don't think they are compatible, but I guess I could mirror videos from a phone or iPad.

Should be good in Metairie.

Sling has Lifetime but Playstation Vue doesnt. You should research Playstation Vue a little before you dive into Sling. You can actually try both out for free for a week.

both can be used on the Fire TV

Ok. I didn't know it was an available service without a PlayStation.

Their marketing department deserves to be fired. Should be Sony Vue.

yes, it's available on Fire TV & Fire Stick, ROKU, PS4, PS3.

You can use it on up to 5 devices at a time. You have unlimited cloud based DVR but it only lasts 28 days.

The internet needs had been a question I was wondering too. 24mbps is enough to watch live football?

Yes, easily.

NFL Network, NFL Redzone (Must be a $35 a month or $40 a month package subscriber to be eligible to buy the Redzone package), SEC Network, Big Ten Network, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN News.

That's a big plus. Kodi has favorites folder capabilities too right? Reliable?

Ok, great. I'm just a college football guy. I'll watch the Saints if I finish grocery shopping in time, but I don't mind missing them. I can watch that on the digital antenna if need be.

From the OP:

You're going to have to sign up on TRAKT.TV to have a favorites folder on your TV add-ons. It's really nice and organized. You can update your library on your fire tv or if you're at work, you can sign in on the website and do it.

Exodus is the next big thing for KODI, IMO. The library is building up and it's starting to gain a lot of support.

One thing I enjoy about Exodus is the integration of TRAKT.TV. You can set up a TRAKT acc and from your laptop or computer (possibly your phone?), you can add Movies and TV shows to your watch-list instead of having to search for them on your Fire TV. It also shows a display of most watched streams, indicating that they are likely the most successful ones

I'm the same way. Vue doesn't have the pac-12 network, but I have to think it's coming soon. Vue has the Big Ten network and Sling has the Pac-12 network.

Awesome. Thanks for the info. Yeah, looking back it looks like I average about 85gb a month. 1TB limit seems totally safe.

Sure thing.

Post here if you have more questions. There's a PS Vue thread a few pages back with a lot of discussion.

Worth noting while vue is on roku, the UI is horrible and I can't recommend the upgrade to the fire tv enough.

My co-worker loads kodi onto FireTV devices and recommended the FireTV based on its speed/performance. I figured I might as well go with it since it will be a main hub for my TV setup.

Yes, the Fire TV is your best bet, IMO.

As far as for Vue, the Fire TV is the best bet behind the PS4.

Playstation Vue

Wow. After looking at their options, I am highly intrigued at having over 100 channels, including ESPNs/SEC, and the DVR capabilities for $44/month. Upon further review, at least most of these are channels that we actually could watch from time to time. She'll live without shitty lifetime movies. Plus they are probably on Kodi somewhere.

You should really look into what channels you're losing if you downgrade from Elite to Core. If they are worth $10 a month, go for it. But they aren't worth it for me..
