Need a little help. I'm interested in getting a Vizio P series, however I noticed they no longer make them with tuners. I recently cut the cord and am using an antenna for local channels. Any help or recommendations on what type of TV tuner I would need.

I had to look those up because I had a hard time believing anyone would build a TV without a TV tuner, but I guess they get around that by calling it a "display".

My first recommendation would be to buy a different TV. If you are dead-set on this display, though, we might need some more information. Do you only watch live OTA TV, or do you want DVR functionality when you use the antenna? If you do want DVR functionality, would you prefer a set top box that plugs directly into the TV, or would you prefer a box that hooks into your home network and streams your DVR'd content to the TV (probably using the P series' built in Chromecast functions)?

I was a bit shocked myself it didn't contain a tuner. The reviews on them are pretty high and the price is lower than others with lesser reviews.

I just want OTA TV. That would require just a digital converter box, correct? It's been a while since I had to worry about this.

Works well, I had to buy because I needed HDMI output. Tuner works better than the one that is in my Samsung as well.

Take a look at Tivo. It will give you four tuners, a full-feature DVR, the best program guide in the business, and access to all the major streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. It has HDMI output to connect to your monitor and satellite units can be added for other TVs in the house. Multiple tuners allow you to view and record simultaneously.

The digital converter box is only needed if your tuner is an analog tuner. All modern devices are already digital and don't need a converter.

I meant if the TV has no tuner and I don't need a recorder, then just a converter box should do. At least that's what I'm asking.

That's correct. You can use the HDMI output to your monitor.

A converter picks up digital TV signals and converts them to analog for older TVs with analog tuners. What you need is a tuner, not a converter.

Those $30 converter boxes do double duty as a tuner with HDMI output.

Exactly. The device I linked above is what he needs.

Ah. Well, kind of goes to show how silly this line of Vizio "displays" is. Any little rinky dink company can pack a tuner, converter, and outputs into a box for $30, but Vizio either thought it cost too much or was too complicated for people. It kind of seems aimed at cordcutters with the Google Cast and all, but if you want to watch OTA TV you have to hang a box off your sleek looking display? I don't get it.

I can just run an HDMI cable from the box to the TV. While it doesn't make sense to me either, the price of the TV plus the converter box is still significantly cheaper than the closest competitor with a similar ranking.

Thanks for the help everyone.

If you don't mind how it looks and it's a good deal, you can't do any better than that.
