During the storm last night my power flashed for a second and the tv never came back on. Its plugged into a power strip with a bunch of other stuff and everything else works fine. Is it possible that only my tv is fried? I tried unplugging it and the Cox mini box and plugging them back in but that didn't work. The mini box light is on so I know that works. The remote lights up so that works too. Is there something else I can try or am I screwed? Its a Samsung 32", just over a year old. Is it common for Samsung's to fail like this?

Second part, any thoughts on Vizio, Insignia, or Toshiba? Been looking at new tvs and these are all fairly cheap but hard to find them in 1080. Don't want to get Samsung again, would prefer not smart but those are also hard to find. Trying to save money right now.

Sounds like a small enough surge that the TV produced enough of a resistance to stop the rest of your electronics from frying.

This also depends on the joule rating on the power strip. If it isn't one with a large outside impedance then yeah then what I said above becomes an even higher probability.

The remote lights up because its on its own circuit and is just pumping RF to the IR receiver on the tv.

A 32 inch should set you back much though. Im sure one can be had for 150 bucks or less.

Another weird thing my tv has been doing is when I switch inputs to my PS4, sometimes the picture doesn't come back when I switch back. I have the PS4 on for usually 3-5 hours playing or watching netflix. Sometimes when I switch back to cable the picture doesn't come back but the sound does. To fix this, I press the guide button on the remote and then switch back to normal view. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't I have to turn the tv off then back on, press the guide button, then switch back to normal view. Its really annoying. I don't know if that means my tv was dying to begin with or just some weird glitch with Cox's system.

You might try leaving the set unplugged for 2 hours. Completely separate it from power. Then fire it up to confirm that Elvis has left the building.

Is anything happening at all? Is any of the lights on? I have repaired several flat screen TVs over the years, and the number one problem is the capacitors on the power supply motherboard blowing out. Costs less than $10 to fix, if you know how to solder.

With the TV unplugged, pull off the back panel. Good caps are flat on top, bad caps will have a dome shape to them and may be leaking at the top or bottom.

My 55 inch Samsung also suffered from this.

It makes a kind of high pitched humming noise when its plugged in.

If you paid for it with a credit card you may have extended warranty coverage beyond the limit of the Samsung warranty.
