I am cutting the cord soon and going with drtv now and kodi but also want a OTA setup. I was leaning to tablo but do I read right that there is no DD 5.1? What about for the Tivo version?

Correct.
One of the very few complaints I have with this product. Not sure this would have been a deal breaker for me as I only watch news and football games with Tablo. But it would be nice to have. If you check out their community forums you will see this topic brought up A LOT.

I use an Xbox One S and the additional TV tuner for OTA TV and I can tell you that DD 5.1 does come through. However, there's no real point in it.

Do you want DD 5.1 for local news? Nope.
Do you want DD 5.1 for national sports like football, basketball, golf, racing, Kentucky derby, ncaa final 4, etc etc? Nope.

While I can see the wanting of DD5.1, it's virtually pointless for OTA TV. At least in my opinion.

I am only wanting it for the shows we watch that are on the ABCs of the world. I have not had a OTA in a long time...they also have there usual sit coms right? I could get them via kodi or one of the channel apps but I dont know if they have DD that way.

What about tivo...do they record OTA with DD if its there?

I think I still rather tablo for the wireless use and apps but just checking before pulling the trigger. I have seen it come up on the tablo forum...just didnt seem like it was going to happen anytime soon

I think so but they have a new dvr/tuner out or maybe even 2 new ones out. I'd go check TiVo.com to see their specs.

Keep in mind that TiVo requires a monthly subscription yet Tablo doesn't. Just a pros vs. cons for you to weigh on how badly you really want DD 5.1.

Sounds like you just feel like wasting money and having more hassle.
You have Kodi. You don't need a tablo or TiVo. Surround sound isnt' that important to have when you're watching a sitcom.

Kinda true. So does Tablo if you want all the features, but is is much cheaper than TiVo. I let my free trial expire long ago. I found I didnt need all the extra benefits of the subscription with my viewing habits. The DVR is a nice feature but with just watching news and sports, I have no need to record those.

Yes and no. I can be on a channel within 15 second watching local programming vs a couple minutes thumbing through Kodi. Also, I have better HD picture with my Tablo than I did when I was paying top dollar for HD cable. That can be hard to do with Kodi at times. Tablo is much more convent.

Tablo will give you the exact lineup as you would have with cable at current times. Only difference is the time it takes to flip between channels. This is NOT a Tablo issue but the way the signal is received from the antenna. Takes about 10 second to load. BUt once the channel is loaded, you can flip back n forth between a couple fairly quickly.

I realize most dont care about DD 5.1 but I do...really for anything I watch. I have a sonos 5.1 setup in my bedroom and a 7.2 system my den with 120" projector. I like HD and 5.1 so im just seeing what my options are before picking one up.

I like kodi...but like said you can wast some serious time looking for a viable stream on some things...and I also try to look for HD and DD on that too if possible.

I smell what you steppin in, NOLAGT. I have surround built in my house as well and its always on when the TV is on. It just wasn't a huge deal for me based on what I use the Tablo for.

I really like with table I just need the app on my ATVs and dont need to hard wire the dvr into anything...I can but would be easier to not. Guess ill look at tivo some more and see if table is my best pick for what I want.

The $399 version of Tivo Romio and any Tablo (with optional lifetime subscription) do not have monthly fees for updated guides for life.

The Tivo is locked with one tv that is directly connected to that TV. It also has "tivo minis" you can buy to use on other TVs.

the Tablo hooks up to your antenna and is either Wifi or Ethernet. You don't have connect the Tablo to your TV, just the antenna. (I put mine in attic and use the wifi)

The Tablo has an app that you watch the OTA on through Iphone, Roku, FireTv, Ipad, Tablets, Droids, etc.

The Tablo has some capability to watch via LTE coverage when not in wifi as well.

There is a new unit called "Air TV" - it hooks up to your TV but also is an android box and you can watch Sling, Netflix and your OTA on this box.

I have never wasted time looking for a viable stream. If it comes on network tv, or hbo/showtime, you'll have a 1080P stream up the next day.
And you can go and favourite your shows now so there's no searching for it anymore. I literally open Kodi, hit the up button 2 times, press enter, and all the shows that I watch are sitting right there waiting for me to click one.
The only show that I've watched where I had trouble with the stream was Alone on the History channel, and that was one of the first episodes and after about a week there was a good one finally. If the show is even somewhat popular, there aren't streaming issues, unless it's on your end with your internet. I take it your using a fire stick not close to your router. I have it on my sony android tv, and I have an Ethernet plugged into the tv. I have watched many movies and shows on it. Could not tell you the last time I watch something that buffered or anything, even for a second, and i'd say at least 90% of what I've watched was in 1080p.

I love HD and surround sound as well. I was going to wait until Planet Earth II came out on blu ray, but it was on Kodi in 1080P and looked glorious.

Those can probably all be watched on abc app. All you'd need locals for is local news and sports.

What repro you using? Ive been on Exodus lately and its hit and miss with me. Usually watching The Walking Dead and Gold Rush. Gold rush almost never comes in anywhere near 720. TWD usually is in HD. Im also on a fire stick and this might be my issue as well.

I knew about the other comparisons...I prefer tablo its just the DD thing thats a sticking point for me at this time.

Now Ill also say im new to kodi and im sure there are much easier ways for me to find things than what im doing. And im using a fire TV and its right by one of my unifi APs with cox 200/20 service. Could have buffer setting wrong in the fire TV tho...I have fooled with it and made it better some but I dont really know what im doing there just looking online to figure it out.

UJ I was wondering that too...if I have a tablo but want something in DD maybe one of the channel apps on atv would have it. The DRTV now credentials work for those apps?

EDIT I looked up the Dish AirTV...assuming thats what your talking about? Can it DVR anything OTA or otherwise? DD sound output?

Thanks! I saw the air tv stuff. I am also now looking at the hdhomerun box...seems it does 5.1 but I would have to do a media server with plex for the DVR? Not opposed to that...but not sure on the how or the advantages outside of better live TV viewing. Can I use plex and the MS for other stuff? Macbook backups ota? I dont have any music or movie files...I spotify or stream it all.
