Switching from satellite to cable

I am switching from DirecTV to Comcast(TV & Internet). They sent me a self installation kit, but they are now telling me they need to send a tech out since my previous service was satellite. They said they need to "activate" my cable. The previous owners had Comcast so the wiring from the street and in my crawl space is all in place.
I don't want to take off work and wait and then pay Comcast $100 to simply connect wires.
Does anyone have experience with this situation? Is it something I can do or should I just bite the bullet and get a tech?

There is a good chance they have a filter on the line, so even if you connect it up yourself it won't work.
