Startup advice for new tv/internet service
Posted on 2/9/17 at 2:14 pm

Moving into an apartment and will be responsible for setting up internet and tv. Probably will go through cox, but are there any other suggestions, or better companies to go with? Any ways to get a killer deal as a first-time customer or a package I should go with? Anything to be weary of them trying to sell me? Should I bother getting TV at all?
Thanks for the help!

The only thing I'd get from a cable company these days would be internet service. The streaming TV packages are good enough now and will continue to improve. I have PlayStation Vue and really like it, but PS Vue, Sling and DirecTV Now all have different packages, price points and pros/cons, so do some research to see which one fits you best.

So the consensus is internet so far, is Cox the best for that? Also is a "higher package" advisable since I would be streaming often? What's enough?

What area are you in? If New Orleans or B.R. and you can get the ATT Fiber, then I'd probably go with that but if not, Cox is slightly cheaper for faster internet.

Yeah, just get Cox internet, get a FireTV, get Playstation Vue, if you are in BR, then they have CBS in thier lineup now, so you can literally watch every sports game on tv either through WatchESPN, NBCSports, or FoxSportsGo app. install kodi. Kodi is your new DVR. You don't need netflix or HBO b/c all their shows will be on Kodi. They only thing you won't have that you would with cable or satellite is the ability to rewind live tv, even though you can somewhat do that that Vue, it just sucks.
You can go get cable/satellite if you really have to be able to rewind and pause live tv, if you feel that it's worth $70-100/month to do so.

I guess my real question is i'm seeing stuff like
"Enjoy the new Contour with 220+ channels, fast Internet speeds and unlimited calling to 30+ countries. Plus, get free professional installation and a free HD receiver rental. All with no risk, no contract, no catch." for 89.99 a month and just internet is between 40-85. Whats the Catch??

probably for 1 tv, probably has a HD and DVR fee, modem/router fee, and i'm sure some other fees that will make that $90/month $125/month and pricing probably last a year at best and will be over $200 after that.

Get Cox internet and just stream what you want.

What about at&t vs cox internet. Seems like I could get a lot more speed for less with at&t.

Do what you want but ATT DSL is shite. I do'nt know about the giga whatever they have, but i'll never do business with anythign associated with AT&T for as long as i live, but that's just me.

I've got it. Took a huge gamble on it and it's working fine for me

well i do my computer work from home, and with dsl i constantly got kicked off my vpn, constantly. I tried so many things to fix that issue. switch to Cox, never get kicked off my vpn and have speeds above 100Mb all the time.
You also get times where your speeds are next to none with DSL, in my experience, and it happen far too often for my liking.

and that is for 1 tv only with no DVR.
it's $8.50 a month for an extra HD reciever, $2/month for a cable card for basic cable to other tv's.
You also won't have DVR.
it'll be $21/month to get a reciever that records 2 shows at a time, $28/month to get a receiver that records 6 shows at once.
It's $10/month for your wireless router, if you want wifi.
That "enjoy more" telephone crap is $5/month.
so this $89.99, after your done getting the things you want, will likely end up being at least $130/month, unless of course you are fine with not having wifi or DVR capabilities, and you only have 1 tv.

Buy your router. Streaming services on all the other TVs.
Total cost: $89
