Samsung appears to be planning to permanently disable Galaxy Note 7 units in the US with an update that would prevent the recalled phone from charging.

According to an image obtained by The Verge, an alert went out to at least one Note 7 owner on US Cellular today stating that, “As of December 15th, Samsung will modify the software to prevent the Galaxy Note 7 from charging. The phone will no longer work.”

Samsung declined to comment, and US Cellular did not respond to a request for comment.

How many of you tech baws still living on the edge with your Note 7?

Couldnt you just not install the update? Or root the phone and flash a custom rom?

The text message is a little off the map to place all the blame on the manufacturer and not the carrier. Samsung and the carriers are blacklisting all Note 7 IMEI's rendering them useless, so while Samsung may be pushing an update to prevent charging the IMEI's are also being blacklisted, so ROM's and forgoing updates will be to no avail.

Just factory reset my Note 3 amd will reactivate. Sprint doesn't offer anything close to the Note 7 that I want to be stuck with. Will wait to see what comes out in the Spring.

Figured this would happen eventually, so I traded mine in awhile back.

Was going to be my next phone... then moved on to the LG v20, but that one seems to have issues too. So sitting on the sidelines for now.

V20 has issues?

It's one of my candidates.
