Since 2556x1440 is a standard resolution size, it may be cheaper for apple to buy those screens instead. Economies of scale.

put an iphone 5 very close to your face and see if you can notice pixelization

i just did and I can't

with a large HDTV, you can definitely see pixels if you're close to it, no one is knocking that

however, i don't think our eyes have changed, so the retina display pretty much maxed out the PPI that we needed

now of course if the new screen is larger like you say, it needs more pixels


I've seen plenty people say that the higher pixel density screens on android phones do look better than the iPhone even though you can't see the pixels on either. I haven't looked at the newer screens close enough to form an opinion.
