I was looking at security cams but I might go with a security company instead like ring, vivint, or simple safe.

Mainly a doorbell camera and 1 or 2 outside cameras.

So possibly turning a DIY job into a subscription/contract service?

Ring. Not very expensive as far as monitoring goes either. I have multiple locations on my app. No complaints

Agreed. Initial setup is somewhat expensive for the cameras, but after that it’s not bad. I have multiple alarm systems and multiple cameras at 3 separate locations, and it’s easy for me to keep up with.

I like Eufy better than ring. Local storage on a home base and you can still see it anytime. Both companies are spy happy but Ring is WAY worse. Ring will also turn over your video to the government without consent, and they have done it often. I am not sure that Eufy can even do that if you are not using their cloud storage, but if they can frick them too.

Vivint is one of the worst companies on the planet. Don't walk, but run from them.

To me, it doesn't make sense to pay a security company. Why pay for that when you can buy your own alarm system components and also have AI human detecting cameras that will notify you within seconds of detecting a person on your property BEFORE they potentially break into your house versus a minute delay waiting on an alarm company employee to call you AFTER a break-in? If someone is snooping around my house, I want to see that for myself whether it is someone who has a right to be there (delivery person, neighbor coming to your door, Cook's Pest Control worker, etc.), or a solicitor (who I would tell them over my camera that we are not interested) or a prowler (who I would tell them through the camera to GTFO and we are armed and prepared to protect ourselves and/or the police have been called and are on the way.). Perhaps you also have bright floodlights and/or external sirens that you can activate in time that would scare off the intruder before they are able to get into your house.

If the police need to be called, we can do that ourselves whether we are at home or away.

Scenario 1 (paid alarm company system with door, window and glass break alarms): A burglar/home invader breaches into your home and you are in a deep sleep. You will have relatively less time to react.

Scenario 2 (Do-It-Yourself non-subscription alarm components that notify your smartphone plus AI enabled outdoor cameras). A burglar/ home invader is approaching your house. You are notified before they break in and likely much sooner, especially if you have "hardened" your home against break-ins (reinforced doors, security storm doors, security window film, etc.). That additional time would help you potentially scare them off or at least be more awake and prepared.

If you are worried about fires, they also make WiFi enabled smoke/carbon monoxide detectors that will notify you via a smartphone app.

Same goes for water leaks.

You can buy any kind of alarm you need and have it notify your smartphones instead of an employee of some alarm company that exhibits work ethic and a sense of urgency less than you.

I've got the Ring Pro Doorbell and the Simplisafe security system. I'll try to break down both without a ton of word vomit.

Ring - $30/year for unlimited camera recording storage. I will likely add the Ring Floodlight cameras to my house because those are cheaper than the Simplisafe ones. The camera quality is also slightly better. I had purchased the camera before ever getting a security system. The Ring App also utilizes the security system if I were to have ever purchase one. I've seen reviews on the Ring security system and they sound just as comparable as Simplisafe. Quick Google search I see it's possible $20/month or $200/year to have the Ring monitored system. Could be wrong.

Simplisafe - I really enjoy it. I've had a few accidental alarm trips (opening the door with the alarm armed and forgetting to turn deactivate) and Simplisafe contacted us in less than 60 seconds. We got a really good deal on a kit that was around 30-40% off and a free indoor camera. Easy to mount sensors with camera or stick them with 3M tape. $27.99/year is a solid price in the long run once you pay the price for the equipment, and you can always add more. I really enjoy having the alarm key fob and Smart Lock. Would recommend getting those if you purchase a system. We had one issue with a sensor that didn't stick to the wall properly (user error) and it would not work. We called Simplisafe and got a new sensor shipped back for free, sent back the old one in the new box.

I had them for a couple years at my previous home. The service and equipment was fine, but they are a frickING NIGHTMARE to deal with when you want to cancel the service. Unless you plan to use them until the day you die, don't bother.

My vote is for Ring. I have a doorbell cam and 2 stickup cameras on my new home. The stickup cams have connected solar panels so I never have to worry about batteries. The motion alerts work great and the picture clarity is very good.
