Going through some things while cleaning out my uncles house (he passed away), I found his iPad. I'd like to be able to swipe it clean and restore it with my apple account. Unfortunately to do so I need his password. We have no clue what it is. I've been told the Apple Store will not help for privacy reasons. How do I get this done? I'd hate for it to be a digital paper weight.

one option you could try is forget password and do a new one. only if you know the email password to reset though...

It can be done. I think you have to do it through iTunes and be hardwired to it. I'll see if I can find a link.

eta-My friend in IT here at work said it's not as easy as it used to be. He said that if you have the proof of purchase then Apple will help you.

This...if you registered the iPad with Apple then you should be able to have them do a reset on it. I had to have 5 of them done at work last year (units that had been returned by users who had retired in the past). My IT group had to contact Apple to have the reset done...it took about 3 days before it was complete.

I have to "reset" ipads that have been activation locked a few times per year.

This is my process:

Send an email to pv_inst_amr@apple.com with as much information below as you have available.

CASE NUMBER: N/A
ORIGINAL SALES INFORMATION:
PRODUCT PURCHASE DATE:
INVOICE/RECEIPT NUMBER:
SERIAL NUMBERS:
PRODUCT IMEI/MEID:
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
BUSINESS/INSTITUTION NAME:
REQUESTOR NAME:
PHONE NUMBER:
STREET ADDRESS:
CITY/STATE:
POSTAL CODE:
EMAIL ADDRESS:
UNLOCK AUTHORIZATION STATEMENT: I, (your name here) representing (Owner of iPad) authorize Apple, Inc. to unlock the devices listed.

ATTACH A COPY OF ORIGINAL SALES RECEIPT/INVOICE

It works for me but I have never tried it on a personally owned iPad just the enterprise owned devices at work.
