Recovered files with Puran and now im stuck

Im on win 7 and had a partition go missing on a friends HD. Two questions:

1. I recovered a few instances of images, and non of them actually render a picture, but say a real size (like not just a few kb like a link to a file would be)
Says they are jpg but nothing.

2. The program said it could recover partitions, but short of recover the entire thing, making an image and then restoring the image ( which im not confident would work) how do they intend you recover it.
