Got a receiver for Christmas and having some trouble setting up and getting full functionality of the receiver.

the model is LINK

initially, i set the hdmi out from the receiver to the first hdmi input in the tv. all other electronics (directv box, apple tv, and playstation) plugged into the inputs for hdmi in the receiver. i had no issues, could turn the receiver off and the hdmi passthrough would allow audio to be played through the televsion. could also turn receiver, select the right input and audio would come from home theater speakers.

today, i cannot get television audio to play through home theater speakers. nothing changed that i know of. switched to fm radio on the receiver and plays fine through the home theater speakers.

i don't really know what's wrong. i tried maybe the order i turned them on but that didn't work

any recommendations?

Look in your manual and see if the HDMI-CEC feature must be enabled when using HDMI passthrough; it's a common requirement. If so, make sure it's enabled on all your equipment, including TV. Then power everything off and back on again and see if it works. Later, when it starts to drive you crazy with random issues, turn all that shite off and use a remote with macros that can power stuff up, switch inputs, etc; that's what most people end up doing. If was enabled all along, well, now you know what to do.

What if you don't see HDMI-CEC? Look for manufacturer-specific names like Viera Link, KURO Link, etc. The non-standard names are part of the bullshite that characterizes the feature.

I searched everywhere for that feature on both receiver and television and couldn't find it or anything that seemed similar.

As of now I only have surround speakers and do not have front left, front right, center channel or subwoofer. Those all come in the mail tomorrow. Could that possibly be the issue?

ETA:

In the above diagram. I have completely skipped the optical cable. Is it necessary and could this be part of my problem?

Denon appears to call it "HDMI Control". Your AVR should have it.

With just the surrounds connected (as surrounds), I don't understand why you were getting (normal sounding?) audio before. With just two speakers, you would have wanted to temporarily connect them as fronts!

Not part of your problem. The TV's optical out is useful only for audio that doesn't first come into the AVR, e.g. built-in TV apps, TV tuner, or components that are plugged directly into the TV.

When you get all your speakers, run the auto setup using the setup microphone. This will set the distances, levels, etc and should play tones to help you identify the speakers and confirm they're hooked up correctly. When that's finished, review what it did, particularly the speakers' sizes and the crossover for the sub. As you have a subwoofer, if it set the speakers to large, you will probably want to override and set them to small.

thanks for the help man, much appreciated. if not looking for that setting i wouldn't have found the problem.

i found the solution to the problem. IN THE VIDEO SETTINGS ON THE RECEIVER (WTF), the HDMI AUDIO OUT (in the video settings wtf) was set to tv and not to AVR. my volume was coming from the tv and not the surround speakers.

i swore up and down i didn't change a setting but apparently my inebriated self did and didn't remember.

No it should not. The receiver is almost always a better device at distributing an
Union and video signals. TVs are terrible at this and limited in their feature set. Better signal path is to let the receiver do the switching.

It's much easier to park the tv on one input and switch audio and video with the receiver.

well, forgive me for not communicating clearly

it, was a reference to the amp

so, we agree, not disagree

and apparently the OP figured it out, and has it straight now...so all is well...
