Programmers Help - Language + input needed

So I would like to create a simple program that will allow me to put my movie collection on my storage drive into a nice, categorized list.
Basically I want to be able to sort it by Genre, not concerned with doing it by actors/whatever else. Keep it simple. Maybe even have a random generate filter. I'm just curious about how it will draw the movies from the source?
1. What language?
2. Where do I start?
3. I don't mind putting in the time, this will be my first program so I want to build it myself, I would just like some guidance if somebody is kind enough to teach me because I'm willing to learn.
4. Thank you!

You're JUST starting coding?
If so, Excel or Access should meet most of your requirements. I used to develop alot and have hundreds of movies and found this to be quickest and easiest solution.
Google docs also has some nice options if you want to access your list from anywhere.

I was going to say if this is a goal you have to learn how to code then Python would be as good a starting place as any. BUT, if you're wanting to learn to code to JUST sort movies you have then you're biting off more than you can chew and should use a database program.
