I guess there is no root or custom roms for the AT&T version of the Note 4 at this time.

I don't believe there is yet. Sounds like the bootloader is an issue with yet another Samsung device.
There are a few things you can do without root in the meantime like disabling bloat. Which imo with Samsung is enough reason to root in itself.
