Is there a switch that can be used with 3rd party LED lights that will connect that light to the hub and allow it to be controlled by the app?

Yes. Any bulb utilizing zigBee will pair with the hub.

Of the top of my head that includes the GE link bulbs and the cree but you just need to look at which wireless radio the bulb uses.

Eta no switch required.

Sorry, I was referring to the existing LED can lights. Without replacing those, is there a switch that will control them that links with Hue?

i dont think any zigbee-based light switches exist (I could be wrong).

for what you're doing, you could either buy a lutron hub and lutron switch ($$$) or look for a wifi-based switch that would work independently but could be voice-controlled via alexa or google home.

or get a zwave switch and invest in a hub (smart things, wink, raspberry pi with zwave usb stick..)

given the hue app itself is pretty weak (designed mainly for the lights) you need a better app anyway to string together stuff where you turn the lights on automatically, etc.

..or are you talking about replacing your can lights with hue bulbs *and* adding a smart switch?

I have a hue hub for light strips under cabinets and built ins. Also LED can lights that just work off a normal switch. I want to tie it all together

You need to consider 3 things:

1. An app that can control multiple things. You'll want your thermostat and other smart stuff in the mix sooner or later so this is your number 1 consideration. I used to recommend the free wink app.. You don't have to buy anything to use it. No ads and no limitations.

2. Decision on what type of switch. Only WiFi switches or plug adapters like ihome work out-of-the-box without the purchase of additional hardware

3. Most home automation works off a very low power form of WiFi with the 3 main radios being lutron, zigBee and zwave. However none of these is capable of connecting to your WiFi network without some type of hub with those specific wifi radios built in. Honestly your choices here are lutron (but it only supports lutron radio), smarthings or wink.

In a stunning bit of myopia none of the big players - Alexa, Google home and a-hole homekit support those low power radios.

I swear as God as my witness I did not make that typo on purpose but I'm leaving it.
