Dammit if I didn't so something stupid. I tried to dropbox some files to someone, I guess they couldn't figure it out and asked if I could pdf them to them. I've never created pdf's before, so I googled up a jpg to pdf creator, found one on download.com with good reviews. As it installed, it also installed at least 3 more crapware programs on the computer as well (very new win 8.1 lenovo). I went on to go to control panel, uninstall programs, sort by date, and uninstall all of the junk. As I was doing this my AVG caught one of them and quarantined (I guess), one of the programs. Well, when I restarted, I logged in, and nothing but black screen with a mouse pointer. I could pull up task manager, but couldn't figure out what the hang up was. I finally was able to restore to a restore point from last week, and all is well now. But man am I mad at myself that it even happened. FML.

I ended up just attaching the jpgs to emails to get the files to the recipient. Thanks for listening.

But then I would have an apple and none of my software I need for work would work on it.

The malware was binkiland.com

Just figured out the chrome search engine hijack was still there. Bastards.

when you download programs like the PDfer, there is usually a windows version and a mac version. when you download the mac version, there are no viruses attached. so like i said, this wouldn't have happened with a mac.

I use Download.com to research what I want. Then I ALWAYS go to the vendor's website to download.

That avoids most of the crapware.

It's weird to see a thread title edited but without an actual edit

Rite of passage.

We've all downloaded a nice looking piece of freeware only to get mauled by the crapware.

Heck, I've done it a few times with flv to mp3 converter software.

I've finally learned to pay attention to the various boxes that pop up during installation.

This was your second mistake.

Your first mistake was that you apparently don't have any plan in place to recover from losing your machine, much less have done any practice runs to be sure you can do it for real.
