Ive had a canon powerahot 750 for the past 8 years which had served me well, but it broke on a recent trip (my fault as I didn't have a proper case for it)

I like to go hiking a lot and take pictures of the outdoors.
I liked my old camera, but would definitely like something with better picture quality for taking photos of large landscapes, mountain ranges and such.

I usually have room in my backpack, so size isn't too big of a priority, but relatively smaller would be more ideal for hiking. I don't know much about cameras, and don't intend to get into the hobby anytime soon. Just looking for a great cam for my purposes. My budget is about 500-600$, give or take.

Your budget and backpack space say DSLR or micro 4/3rds camera, but everything else you said suggests getting a superzoom with a wide angle lens. I haven't shopped this space in a few years, but last time I checked the superzooms were down close to the size of point and shoot cameras while increasing their zoom range. That's where I'd start my search if I were you, look at the superzooms.

well I used to be an slr fan, then went digital

then I got tired of lugging the thing around

then I found this;

LINK

I put it in a logitech zipcase and it takes fantastic pix, wide, zoom...I never regretted buying it.
