Nexus 6P unlock issue

About twice a week when I use my fingerprint to unlock my 6P, I get a prompt to enter my PIN for additional security. Is this some kind of glitch? I know it needs it when you reboot the phone, but I'll just be responding to say a text notification I just got, and the prompt shows up. Thoughts?

From a similar thread on Reddit:
There are three scenarios for getting this message. It's not random.
1) If you didn't enable a PIN when you first setup the device, the encryption was locked with the default key. So you'll see this message when you boot up as a security feature. (If you setup a PIN during first boot, then it locks the encryption with that key and you get a very vanilla looking screen on boot before the phone actually finishes booting.)
2) If your device performs a soft reboot (if you see the message "System UI not responding" or you actually trigger a soft reboot via a root method/app).
3) The fingerprint reader was activated too many times with a bad read.
Sounds like #2 is most likely. Have a software glitch that triggers it.

If you don't unlock it for 4hrs you'll have to use your pin too iirc. I see it sometimes with smartlock (use Android wear, and have lock disabled at home).
