I'm building a new house with about 4200 sq ft under roof. I would like to go ahead and run cat6 all over it. As far as panel placement, would the garage be ok? Or would the heat cause issues? Also, would 1000 ft of cat6 be enough if I'm just running one line to all rooms? Any other suggestions are welcome. TIA

Why don't you take your plans and measure out the distance of each run to determine how much cable you need. No one will be able to tell you if it is enough without knowing how tall your ceilings are, how far the panel will be, how many rooms you have, etc.

I would try to run everything to a more central location to minimize cable use. Maybe you have a spare closet in the plans (or can add a spare closet) somewhere in the middle of the house?

Just built one and the homeowner wanted the cat6 ran to every room and the panel was in the utility room.

I seriously doubt 1000 ft is enough.

I wouldn't put it there. The heat and humidity will eventually kill your equipment.

I just finished off a closet on the second floor and consolidated internet, wi-fi, alarm, VoIP phone, and TV tuners. Cat6 to 5 rooms with space on the patch panel to add more later. Heat would be a problem not only because the garage is uncooled but also the equipment itself generates a certain amount of heat. I got away with just a louvered door but putting a PC or home theater equipment in the closet would probably require adding an A/C duct. If it's new construction I would add the duct.

I agree it's hard to estimate the amount of cable needed, and that 1000ft doesn't sound like enough. The heat will definitely cause an issue in the garage. I'd recommend a central closet or room for a cabinet. Even better if it has AC. You want something that you can access easily.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'm going to order 2000 ft. I have a closet and a utility room that are fairly central in the house. I guess the good thing about it being in the utility room is I wouldn't need extra cooling. The closet would probably require a vent or a/c outlet.

I did a 3300 sq ft house with a box of 1000 ft cat 6 with runs to all the rooms and had cable left over.

Run conduit up the walls to house the cable in case you want to add something or change them out later.

Do not run conduit in a house. Install smurf duct and put 4 square boxes with plaster rings instead of little single gangs.

I'd spend a couple hundred now and over do it... trying to run cable on exterior walls can be an adventure if they are going to use spray foam for insulation. That shite practically turns to rock once it settles.
