This would be a good choice for just a printer:

Brother HL-2270DW Compact Laser Printer with Wireless Networking and Duplex

$75 at Amazon Prime.

That's a good deal.. They pull that same starter toner bullshite so you only get 700 pages initially instead of 2600 but the reviews on the $12 generic replacementv toner are great. At that price for a new toner this is the cheapest cost per page printer I've seen.

Eta we're talking under a penny per page with that $12 toner.

I saw another Brother with built-in scanner for $99, also Prime. About the toner, there may be a way to get more life out of the cartridge:

LINK

I did this for an earlier model of this entry level printer, and I printed another several hundred pages before upgrading to a model (HL-5370DW) with an automatic duplexer, which is one feature I would not do without. My 5370 page count is 2203, and I'm still on its original toner. I've had these laser printers since 2008 or so, and I've yet to replace the toner on either.

I love these laser printers. I only had inkjets before, and the cost per page was 25-30 cents due to the damn cleaning cycles the HP printers frequently conducted for my light usage pattern. Most of my ink ended up wasted, automatically sprayed out to try to keep the heads from clogging. These weren't cheap HPs, either, with one an all-in-one that cost $250. Two Epson printers I had actually clogged. The only way inkjets make economic sense is with daily, heavy usage, preferably with a continuous ink system, which means they make no sense for ordinary home users.

ok frick it. i'm listing all the tricks these dirty motherfrickers use for inkjets in one post. frick them

1. cartridges cannot be refilled..period. they've mastered the engineering of putting 3rd party syringe companies out of business by designing the carts in a way they simply break if you try. [CAD]

2. you can't print black & white without color ink. if your color carts run out..you can't print bw either unless you replace both because they use some of the colored ink to help make the black ink on your paper be more black. [CAD] LULZ

3. they have a $10 monthly SUBSCRIPTION service that lets you print up to 300 pages..and will 2-day ship you ink as your printer 'reports home' that the ink is low [Fight4LSU]

4. 'starter ink' filled 10% full so you are guaranteed to drop another $50-$75 on ink carts within the first 3 months

5. cleaning cycles the printers frequently conducted for my light usage pattern. Most of my ink ended up wasted, automatically sprayed out to try to keep the heads from clogging. [SPOCK]

6. home users typically don't print all the time..an issue made worse by the fact its so expensive so you really want to think about whether you want to use that expensive juice or not. this type of behavior pattern results in full carts drying up or clogging so you snooze you lose. this happened to me when i went on ebay and made a purchase of a 6 cartridge bundle for my ink jet. you guessed it, 3 of them dried out before i ever got to them despite being sealed. [SPOCK & CAD]

It really is a shame about the inkjets, because the HPs I had printed some damn fine looking photos that have stood up despite being magneted to the fridge the last 7 years.
