I would prefer to use a MS Office product that I can manipulate myself and can scale my business with as time goes on.

What I'm looking for:
I am a contractor and have a large spreadsheet with customer and job specific selections. I would like to be able to have customer make their selection on "Sheet 1" and then that populate a list of all materials associated with that one product on another sheet for my field guys "shopping list"

Do you plan to send a copy of the spreadsheet to customers for them to make their selections and then send back to you? Or do you want it to be a "cloud" copy to skip the emailing steps?

I know that pretty much anything can be done on a spreadsheet, but I don't believe everything should be done on a spreadsheet. They can get messy.

Is it possible that a different type of software would be a better fit for this particular workflow?

All of the selections are done face to face.
Initially I sit down and run through each possible variable for each selection item specific to their project.

Most of it is pretty standard.

I would like for them to be able to sit down with them and our sheet (would like to eventually make it more presentable than a spreadsheet!) and have them make their selection and then the list of all materials for that one item create itself on a different sheet/list.

Example:
Customer picks a faucet

Material sheet would create list of all connections and items for that one type of selection based on quantity of selected faucet.

Honestly, this sounds. Pretty easy. Why don’t you hire a college intern for a summer and make that their job? It could be done on spreadsheet with some front end data entry screens so that it doesn’t look like a spreadsheet. Another thing you may want to consider is a website, so customers can do it on their own from home if they prefer or implement it on a workstation if they prefer to have you type it in for them.

Either way, it sounds like easy work for someone who is tech savvy.

Microsoft Lists may work. At first thought I would say an access database would be a little more scalable than an Excel file in this case.
