So my AI Robotics professor requires us to use Ubuntu for our OS in his class. We do our labs using ROS and a Turtlebot simulator.

But for some reason I'm having a problem getting Ubuntu to run on VirtualBox. I am using an HP Turbo Silver that's like two months old so I don't think it's my machine. When I installed version 12 of Ubuntu it worked fine, but for some reason versions 13 and 14 won't work which is what is required.

After I install Ubuntu on VB, it will take me to a login screen and just infinitely loop on that page after I enter my password.

Anyone have some ideas on how to fix this?

Can you use 15.10? That's the latest version. If not go for the lts which I think it's 14.04. In any case it should definitely work. Not sure what the issue you're having is. Might need to reinstall or re-download your install media. You could also try to Google and see what you get. As a last resort you could try using Ubuntu with a different desktop environment in case unity is somehow throwing you off. That would be kubuntu or xubuntu or Ubuntu gnome edition. Something like that.

Its weird, I can only get version 12.04 going. I tried 14.04 first and it gets caught in the log in loop, then tried 15.10 and it does the same, 13.10 will just give me a black screen and does nothing.

We are using ROS Indigo which according to the installation Wiki is only supported on 14.04 or 13.10 ( LINK)

I Googled trying to use Indigo on 12.04 and it says its possible but you have to "build from source" which has instructions here ( LINK2) but I really don't know what the hell that means

If your computer is that new, I'm asssuming it's 64 bit. Based on that. I would ask if you accidentally downloaded the 32 bit version.

Also, when you first started the virtual machine. Did you tell it that you were going to be using Ubuntu, or did you intially tell it a different OS?

Lastly. Where and how did you install it? I didn't think you could start an Ubuntu install on a VM through a downloaded file. Pretty sure you need it on a disc or flash drive to install from there.

I originally tried the 64 bit but it said something like "your CPU is __x__ and needed to be _____. I'll try it again in a bit and give that exact message.

Yeah, I did tell it Ubuntu when starting VB.

And I downloaded the file directly from Ubuntus website in the 'downloads' section. But if it does have to be from disc/USB I don't get why the version 12 would work but not the newer ones?

Thanks to y'all helping/offering solutions. I have clicked on literally dozens of links trying to find a work around or something but just cant figure it out.

There are more options. One is to install Ubuntu as a secondary OS, and to boot it up when turning on the computer instead of windows.

Also, there are several free versions of VM software available from other companies. Windows is even doing a free trial of Hyper-V, and I think it lasts a few montbs. Would

Simple thing but needs to be said -- did you check the md5 (or whatever Ubuntu uses for a signature) on the download? It's possible to get an almost but not quite perfect file that almost but doesn't quite work for installation.

Haha thanks but I tried that fix! If there is a solution in a forum or something I have tried it.

When I google "Ubuntu login loop VirtualBox" you can see where I've clicked on all but 2 links on the first two pages of results

I may have figured out the problem:

I originally thought my machine was 64 bit, but when I would go into VirtualBox my only options were the 32 bit versions, so that made me think "well it must be a 32 bit machine", so I decided to confirm that, only to find out that it was in fact a 64 bit.

So I Googled this problem and something said I needed to "enable virtualization technology" in order to get the 64 bit. Now after enabling this I am given the option of 64 bit.

Installing now, hopefully I can get past the login screen. I'll let you all know shortly!

ETA: PROBLEM SOLVED!!!! :nana: :nana: :nana: :nana:

Appreciate the help fellas!
