Guys:
I have a Western Digital, My Book ext hard drive for my personal laptop, that apparently is corrupted. Sent it to an IT guy in N.O. who said he can't get the data because he needs a white room to perform the recovery. He does partner with a group that has access to such a facility, but the quote they gave for recovery is from $750 to $2700! Anyone know of a reputable group that performs such tasks at a more reasonable rate structure? TIA

Try this. I have done it several times on corrupted of failing drives and was able to get the info off of it.

Or send me the drive and I will do it for half the white room cost.

I have had luck with the freezer trick one time, though attempting that may cause more damage.

Does the drive spin up at all? Any sounds, whether normal or 'ugly'?

That sounds reasonable to me. Any place would have to look at it first to give a more accurate quote, though.

Sounds aren't any different than when it was functioning. Appears to start up. My laptop recognizes the HD when I plug it in; it just takes hours for it to be able to get just 1 stored file recognized, when it used to be instantaneous for all files stored on it.

If that's the case, you might want to try what stout and GrammarKnotsi posted. I had assumed that the guy you sent it to tried the basic software solutions, but maybe he didn't.

that IS a reasonable quote for white room recovery

since the drive is spinning, you should definitely try the ubuntu method.
recuva is another good free option.
GetMyDataBack is a paid program from runtime, but recovers quite a bit. Costs about $100

before you do anything else, do this ... the most likely culprit is the failure of the external enclosure board ...These fail more often than the drives themselves.. So what you need to do is carefully dismantle the device and plug the drive in to either a sata port on a PC or some sort of sata dock ... mostly likely it will come right up ...

Have you tried this with a raid 0 or raid 1 2 drive mirror setup? Would it be able to access data off one or both of the drives?

While all of the suggestions in this thread are good and valid for data recovery on a hard drive, it sounds to me like this is mechanical failure.

The Ubuntu method and the Recuva software will find files that are deleted or corrupted at the filesystem/logical level. The fact that your files appear eventually, just by leaving it plugged in and waiting, indicates to me that the problem is a physical/mechanical failure.

Don't want to spend $1K+? Probably should have had a backup.
