I have 50Mbps through Cox and streaming quality (and overall internet speed in general) really sucks. Is this normal and how do I fix it?

Wire your house for ethernet and dump the wi-fi connections.

Does your wifi router offer QoS support?

Are you using the 802.11ac?
What is AC in wireless?
WiFi is always promoted using 'theoretical' speeds and by this standard 802.11ac is capable of 1300 megabits per second (Mbps) which is the equivalent of 162.5 megabytes per second (MBps). This is 3x faster than the typical 450Mbps speed attributed to 802.11n.

I have no idea what any of this means. I guess I should get someone to come take a look at it. All I did was pick up the modem/router combo thing from Cox, plug it in, and it doesn't work too well. I'm tech stupid

modem/router combos are not very good. you should keep them separated.

It's the newest way to connect your wifi and a lot faster but you need to make sure whatever you are using to stream will support it. As an example the Xbox One does not support 802.11ac.

Get rid of the modem/router combo. Get a Motorola Surfboard sb6141 or a newer one if you want and a good router. That should solve your issues. When I had the modem/router from Cox my speeds were half of the 50mbps tier I was on. After getting a separate modem and router my speeds were regularly between 50-60mbps.

Have you tried connecting the device you want to stream to via Ethernet to your router? Can you try that first?
At a minimum plug the laptop in via Ethernet and run speed test to establish a baseline on how fast your broadband actually is coming into your house.
The next step is to look into wifi signal issues. If you have a baby monitor unplug that.
Do you use apple or android? Download wifi analyzer and walk around your house seeing how string the signal is in different locations.
How close are your neighbors?
How many wifi networks other than yours can you detect in the house?
Remember others can hide the SSID so other radio interference could be going on even if you don't see other wifi networks.
Try connecting to both 2.4 and 5ghz if it supportsd both.
Change the channel on your router to the one wifi analyzer identified as having less interference.
All these things I mention are super easy even for tech challenged people.

Glad to hear the combo router could be the problem. I generally stream through 2 devices: Apple TV and PS4. I also have mostly apple devices (iPhone and MacBook) Would one of the Apple routers be best to get or stick to something else?
Appreciate the help!

In order to achieve any of these speeds, even the 450 mbps of wireless N, you have to have the same capabilities at both ends of the connection. Even today most downstream devices are still single band, single antenna that are going to give disappointing results.

You are correct and I did mention that in a separate response.
