Looking to replace my laptop...I've looked at the surface among other "traditional" laptops....are there any major limitations to it? Is there a model I should buy for light home use and word processing? How is the wifi?

Yes BUT....

Only get a Surface Pro 3, i5 or better. Also, buy the really nice keyboard ($125-$150ish one). I demo'ed a Surface Pro 3 for the company I work for, then received an extra Pro 2 nobody needed, and the 2 sucks, it's clunky and they got a POS keyboard that is entirely unusable. If I would have gotten the 2 first, I'd say hell no.

There was a thread about this the other day. Of the 40 or so responses almost all were positive. It appears Microsoft may have something with the Surface Pro 3. Its on my list to buy. i'm just waiting for the app store to catch up a bit.

I have the original SP and it is still working great. I have no ragrets. I even put skyrim on it just to see how it would run and it actually ran with the quality set to the lowest. But I don't use it for that. It runs VSE 2012 flawlessly. My laptop has been retired since this thing released...The SP3 must be tits.

Not sure why you're waiting on the app store, but for most basic functions (email, calendar, contacts, music, etc.) the apps are quite good. For example, I really like Xbox music. Obviously it depends on which apps you're interested in, and of course, there's the "you can run any software that you run on a PC" consideration.

Sent from my SP3 (i7/8GB/512GB) with the "nice" keyboard and MS arc mouse

So the entire Windows Software catalog isn't good enough for you ?

3 Pro. Don't go for the basic, the Pro is far more useful because it can run google chrome and chromecast.

Can anyone comment on how the device works with rdp? My main need is remoting into my office systems( windows based). What kind of user experience will i have using rdp.

I have the i5 256 gb version with black keyboard case. I wanted the red but it was exclusive somewhere, can't remember, so eff it.

I miss my macbook because I knew how to work it but this thing is a beast. I've said it many times and here it is again; the trackpad sucks but it is a touchscreen so there's that.

My company is testing these for a laptop/ipad replacement for us.

I hear that the ones we are testing are crashing a lot but Microsoft it working on the fixes with us.

I hope they are ready to roll them out to everyone when the Surface 4 comes out.

it works fine. even better if you have an external monitor or two hooked up to it. It comes in the box running Windows 8.1 Pro. So, it can run any application as your desktop.

The only issue with RDP I could foresee would be the resolution changes depending on your old Windows systems and when you rotate the Surface Pro 3. But, as long as your target RDP resolution is less than the Pro 3, it should be fine.
