Looking for dvd conversion ideas

I am getting ready to take the kids on a 12 hr road trip. My dvd in the car is not reading discs properly, but it has a usb port.
I figured rather than buying a new dvd player, I could just put some movies onto a flash drive and use it.
Are there any free copiers or transfer programs that anyone could recommend?

Handbrake is a great, free utility that I use to rip DVDs to MP4 but I also bought AnyDvd to break the encryption that is found on movie DVDs.
Regardless to the cost of AnyDvd, you possibly will need some type of device that will Transcode the MP4 so that it will play it. I doubt your TV in your vehicle will natively do that.
Eta: this is what I use with a UAB drive to connect to the rca jack on the TV in my vehicle:

I use MakeMKV because it's free and it will read Blu Rays... might need to covert it to a different file type though..

Granted, I've never bought a car with any sort of multimedia options that include screens, but I'm a little surprised your in-car entertainment center will play media off of USB. I would check with the owner's manual to confirm what files they would play, and then yeah, I'd use handbrake to convert them. It's pretty easy to use and free.
