Apparently shopping for a printer is more involved than shopping for a car these days.

Any suggestions?

Toner is what you are looking for, and it varies if you are doing black and white or color.

At one time, I looked at getting a laser color printer.
The printer was about $399
Replacement toners were $99 x 4 colors of toner

As much as I hate paying $18-20 per ink jet toner for my current ink jet printer...............I sure as hell am not shelling out $400 to replace 4 toners when the time comes.

Costco has an ink refill program for about $10 a cartridge

Toner cartridges will last you MUCH longer than Ink will.

Don't get inkjets. Those things are straight up money sinks. The software periodically cleans the print head and uses up all your ink.

Avoid color unless you really really really need it.

Pay a little more at the start for a laser and pay much much much less for the replacement cartridges in the long run.

Hate printers. Those companies are as bad as used car salesmen.

Brother monochrome (black and white) printers are usually the best value. Fairly cheap machine, and toner is usually much lower than it's HP counterparts.

Not sure what type of printer you bought but that doesnt seem correct. I have a color laser multifunction printer that cost about $250 and the toner costs about $80 for all 4. My old inkjet with the XL cartridges printed about 300 pages at $40 for ink, my laser prints about 2000 pages per cartridge.
