I hear you guys talk about these often. Currently there is a deal on one on Amazon and at Best Buy for $70.
This thing a must have in a modern living room? This a really good deal? Can I get a run down to see if it applies to my needs?

What are your needs? I have one, but I don't really do anything crazy with it. It was the cheapest universal remote option I could find with Bluetooth to control Fire TV. I paid about the same for a used one on eBay.

Thanks, just bought it from Amazon because I don't want to deal with the crowds today.

Don't have crazy needs. Mostly just my direct tv. Tv. And have a fire stick.

Yep, that's a really good deal.
It comes with the harmony hub, and the hub is one of my favorite tech purchases ever. It's consolidated my 4 remotes into just the one that comes with it, and it plays well with my Google Home. It sounds like you should only have a couple remotes, so you'll just have to decide for yourself if it's worth $70 to eliminate one remote with some added benefits.
A few examples of how it'll make things easier for you:
- One button push to turn on the TV, turn on the fire stick, change the TV input. + Fire stick navigation.
- One button push to turn on the TV, turn on the direct TV box, change the TV input. + Direct TV navigation.
- One button push to turn off all devices.

So in terms of working with Alexa I'm getting a Dot for Christmas (pretty sure)
Will I be able to tell Alexa what I want to watch and it make it happen?

I've had one version or another for 13 years. The current home control setup is awesome. So good I bought one for my pops and am having to return it. His cheap arse RCA tv can't accept input changes correctly. Every other thing works perfectly.
