Live Streaming TV: Direct TV Now, PS Vue, Sling...who has best picture, and recording ?

I'm wondering which service is best when it comes to recording specific shows, and which functions most like a typical cable box dvr, assuming any of them do?
I'm also curious as to how the playback works on the services that feature DVR type recording of shows. Say I record a show, and when i go to play it does it function like your local cable dvr box where it records the show and the commercials, and does it let you fastforward? Or does it function more like typical cable provider's ondemand selections where you can't always fast forward through a show and they have set ads you have to sit through?

The experience I had with Vue (i only plan on having it during football season each year) was that if you set the DVR, it's all stored in the cloud, and you could def fast forward commercials.
I think there is a 30 day time limit though.

I have Vue. Its DVR function allows you to fast forward through anything, including commercials. I don't have blazing fast internet and I've never had a problem with buffering. I recommend it.

Do you currently use Hulu? If you're already paying the 8$ or 12$ a month, I'd seriously consider looking into the 40$ a month plan that includes your current plan and adds live TV.
It effectively adds live tv for like 30$ a month extra and has DVR functionality. Only downside currently is that it has no AMC.

thanks for feedback all.
sounds like vue is the way to go right now, though i will check into hulu, wasn't aware they offered live tv.
only downside i can see with ps vue from just my brief research is that given where i live i won't have access to the live cable companies (abc, nbc, cbs or fox), it appears i just get access to cbs live. which will be a problem come football season.

I've had Vue and currently have DTVNow. Regarding CBS, I've got a digital antenna football games and it's as clear of a picture as you could ask for. I switched to DTVNow because of the $35 for 120 or whatever channels promotion they were offering. About to switch back to Vue because the buffering and freezing on DTV is almost unbearable.

Direct TV now has been great for me so far.
I'm grandfathered in at the Go Big plan 100+ channels for $30/month (normal price $60/month) and also got a free Apple TV for prepaying 3 months.
Also, if you have an AT&T cell phone you can stream direct tv now data free as much as you want.

From what I've seen on this board, Sling and DirecTV Now don't have DVRs yet. I have PS Vue and it's DVR is far from a finished product but works good enough.
Yes, and many of the shows I've watched have the last few seconds of the previous show at the beginning just like a cablebox DVR might.
Yes. This is cloud based DVR so I don't find it as fast as your cable box, but it's good enough.
As I've mentioned, it's far from a finished product, here are it's negatives:
There is both DVR and OnDemand for shows, and sometimes it will show you shows available on your DVR and sometimes it will show you shows OnDemand. If you've been watching a show on your DVR and they show you the OnDemand episodes this may make it difficult to see what episode you watched last.
Sometimes it loses your viewing history on your DVR so you don't know what episode you watched last.
When a new show is available it defaults to the most recent episode, not "next" episode for you, which requires more scrolling to find the next episode you want to watch.
The DVR isn't based on disk space, but time and the deal they have with the individual networks. Most of the time you only get the last 5 episodes, so waiting until a season is finished to binge watch is not an option.
If you do watch a show OnDemand they say the quality is often better but you can't fast forward.
Even with all of those issues I really like PS Vue, I just hope they fix a lot of these problems eventually.

Really? I don't even get freezing/buffering on the shitty internet here at work. You sure it's not a problem with you wifi?

Thought that might be the problem since the freezing doesnt happen quite as much on the hardwired FireTV as it does on the Fire Sticks, but I ran a speed test over wifi as it was happening and was getting 80-100Mbps down.

Directv now is horrendous for most who had/have it.

very helpful information, especially because i typically wait until the season is over with before i start watching.
i'll take advantage of both of their free trials and go from there, but thanks all for the first hand feedback!

To me, it's all about what service runs on your devices. We use an Xbox One S as our main media player in our living room so it instantly rules out PSVue, DTVNow and only leaves Sling and Hulu.
I'm hoping Google TV can come to more markets soon. Dunno what they're waiting on honestly.

1 work around for this, although it adds another layer of complexity to the equation, is to use the access you get to the different channel's streaming apps and let your computer DVR the shows. I use PlayOn software on my PC to DVR shows and stream them later to my FireTV. It can get complicated because by default I try to use PS Vue's DVR, but I'm far enough behind in TWD that I made sure I downloaded them with PlayOn so I'll be able to catch up when I'm ready.
