It won't be as exciting as last year's event that saw the launch of the Apple Watch, Apple is planning to introduce several new products. Headlining the event will be the 4-inch iPhone SE, Apple's first 4-inch iPhone since 2013.
Joining the iPhone SE will be a new 9.7-inch iPad, a range of new Apple Watch bands, and software updates for iOS 9, watchOS 2, tvOS, and OS X El Capitan.
I personally have been waiting 7 months for a Skylake 13" Macbook Pro. for the past couple of months I thought this event would be when it was announced, but the rumor mill has gone silent on MacBook Pro refreshes. I'll still have my fingers crossed.
I'm surprised a Apple Watch 2 isn't in the cards for today. I guess it too will shift to an annual autumn upgrade cycle.

Product wise, yes. It will be very interesting if they say anything new about the current crypto fight with the FBI. I believe Cook and company is scheduled to testify in front of a congressional hearing tomorrow.

Can watch live if you have the following:

Live streaming uses Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology. HLS requires an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with Safari on iOS 7.0 or later, a Mac with Safari 6.0.5 or later on OS X v10.8.5 or later, or a PC with Microsoft Edge on Windows 10. Streaming via Apple TV requires an Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) with software 6.2 or later or an Apple TV (4th generation).

For those of us not following or can't follow, can we get cliffs notes on this event? Seems like it won't do much for me this go round.

Not much of an announcement but I'm happy with it. Can't wait to get an SE and get rid of this 6S. After many months still can't get used to bigger size and the internals are basically the same.

Is there really a big enough market of people wanting to go back to a smaller screen? I mean, a 4.7 isn't really that big.
After using my G3 or Note4 for a while, looking at any screen under ~5" just seems strange.

The SE is going to be Apple's phone to push them into the Indian Market. They'll get more than their share of folks who are "downsizing," after complaining about not being able to enjoy the phablet experience for such a long time here in the American market I'm sure.
It's also Apple ensuring they have high-quality spec'd phones in multiple size points but in reality, this is going to be used to push into India, where it's possible to keep their growth story going if they can make a dent.

Apple knows how many people are still on a 5s and lower. They want them to upgrade. The Apple market is pretty saturated so what they're looking for is to get people who already own to buy again. It's a strategy they push internally and you can hear it in the keynotes.
