So my dad got this somehow or that is what a couple tech support people have told him. Anyone removed this? They were all telling him its in the router and they wanted like $500 to remove it. I havent been up on the latest virus stuff in like 4-5 years so I have no idea.

I guess it could be in the router, but the doesnt make sense to me.

Anyways, he's saving $450 and buying a new router, I really dont think that will fix his issue though.

Anyone familiar with this?

$500 is insane. Not sure how old he is, but they think he is a rube.

You can just about buy a new damn computer.

He needs to download and run

1.Rkill
2.Malwarebytes.

Profit.

Might not work but it is a good first step before paying some jack wagons who are outright stealing.

Ya, he literally just bought a new computer last week.

They told him it was the router infected. I haven't kept up with this stuff. Me and a couple others told him the 500 or really anything over 100 was a ripoff.

Bleeping Computer has plenty of standard malware removal guides.

Rkill tries to close any program that might stop malwarebytes.

Then malwarebytes should tell him if his computer is infected and fix it.

There are some other programs he will need to run because it takes more than 1 removal program to catch everything.

In the router? Maybe the $500 covers the fancy screwdrivers they need to open it up and the magnificent magnifying glass they use to find the virus

Yeah. That price was such bullshite, he probably ought to call the manager of wherever he went and

1.Say he is reporting them to the better business bureau.
2.Say he probably ought to report them to the police for attempted robbery.
3.Tell them to suck his taint for good measure.

One was webroot, the other was charter.

That's when he went to buy a new router.

Neither of us are electronic dumb. Just havent kept up with software. He felt it was bs and a couple people have told him so, however then virus is real. I'll get him to start the rkill and malwarebytes stuff for removal.

You need to wipe that PC. Koobface is a virus that steals passwords and crap.

You don't need a new router.

Definitely need to clean that PC though.

Half of the time it is easier than getting rid of viruses

There are viruses that target routers... Maybe not koobface, but they are out there.

Asking $500 to repair a $50 device is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.

Even if the router was infected, it can be re-flashed rather easily. Sounds like someone trying to get one over on your dad. As mentioned in this thread, malwarebytes is an ok option and even before that run combofix from bleepingcomputer.com. It's amazing.

Agreed. We had one on ours as well a few years back and just reinstalled the previous firmware and was back to normal. PITA though.

I've always read to use combofix last. Even on bleeping computer.

I've seen many posts that combofix can sometimes mess things up so use it as a last resort not a first shot.

have no clue about the validity of that, but as I said, I've read that on Bleeping.

Having said that, I've used combofix about 3 times over the years with success.
