this. mount your phone as a usb device on your PC and copy the zip to it.

then install it using the TWRP option to flash the ROM. it will let you navigate to the directory on your phone you put the zip into.

also have you tried the CYAN app in the play store? might be an easier way to go about this..but i haven't tried it out myself.

I used to run Hyperdrive on my GS4, but I switched to CM about a month ago. CM is more stable but I can't get my bluetooth headset to pair with it, and I can't get mkv files to play so I'm thinking about switching back.

Sure PA and cyan are cool but vanilla android is finally mature enough that rom flashing isn't necessary anymore.

I like volume wake too much. I could probably do without some things.

I flashed PA but I can't find a settings menu anywhere to change anything. Right now it is stock android pretty much and I have no idea where to find the actual PA settings.

PA features/options are integrated into the existing menus.

I just tried downloading the CM11 zip straight to my phone then installing it through TWRP and I get the same error msg: "Can't install on top of incompatible data"

Do I need to do a factory reset? If so, how do I turn on USB debugging without setting the account back up, in order to run TWRP?

I've been reading that a factory reset will usually solve your problem and the rom will flash.

A factory reset shouldn't touch your TWRP recovery. You will just have to use your phone's key combination to start in recovery mode and flash your rom. If the factory reset deletes all your data, you will just have to boot up normally, put the zip back on the phone, then boot back into recovery and flash.

So you got CM running? Did all your apps reinstall automatically?

Mine didn't. I switched from PA about a month ago.

I think you have to turn on backup and restore before you flash (if it's not already), and then your first boot of a fresh rom it should ask you if you want to turn on backup and restore. If you do, it should restore all your apps.

They usually do... pretty sure I had them synced. I did several full wipes when I was on PA, and they always reinstalled automatically.

My apps restored perfectly. Here is a screenshot of the new homescreen:

One question - is there any way to rename the icons? I've tried googling but couldn't find an answer.

If you're on a custom launcher long press the app and press edit.

Titanium backup is a great app. Just set your backup folder location to external sd. Works perfectly.

I've reached a point where I care little about backups. A factory reset and rom flash is the cleanest way to move forward.

I lose texts? Lol so what. Aside from an ugly divorce 8 years ago I've never needed anything in the 4 billion useless texts people send me.
Mp3s? It's all on Google music.
Videos and photos? All on the cloud.
Contacts? All in gmail.
Installed apps? They just magically come back.
To do lists? All in Google keep.
Books? All in Google books.

The only things I have to do is set up my power toggles and login to the apps that require it.

Eta backups are great if you're testing out roms and want to go right back to your current setup.

Nandroid Manager is a great app. It can restore items directly from your nandroid backup. So if you want the messages, phone log and most importantly for me Bluetooth pairings you can get them from your Nandroid. This has made my compulsive flashing (that sounds naughty) much easier.

interesting. so you're not overwriting with the older nandroid backup..you're just selecting a few items from the archive?
