I've got some questions about online payment systems...

I have a small organization that we recently revamped the website of. The members of the organization can now make payments for a small but significant part of what the organization does online through our website.
The first year we had 20% of our folks use the option. But one of the things we did was utilize Pay Pal for payment receipt. For these folks, we were charged a not insignificant amount which-compared to year's past where we just took mailed checks or CC #'s at our events-cut into the take so to speak.
I'm wondering if there are safe, secure options similar to that of PayPal that will take less of a bite out of us from a fee per transaction standpoint? Obviously online payment processing and receipt reduces friction and back-end work for us and we'd like to keep that. We do business seasonally so by and large a service that charged us monthly would be a six of one, half a dozen of the other situation compared to where we are now using PayPal.
Anyone have any good suggestions?

Depends on the amounts you process. PayPal is more of a flat fee rate as to where you can save if you get lower rates and process enough $
A merchant account can be seasonal so you aren't charged during months you sit idle.
How much did you process last year?

Yeah, your best bet is to stay put for now. If processing increases , say around 50k/yr, then you might start looking.
Fees suck, but you would need to look at what your paying compared to what you would be paying with another method. The savings on 20k per year don't justify the move.
